Unreferenced date December 2009 Image Gaff.jpg thumb 250px right Image Fishing with gaff hook.png thumb 250px RIGHT Fishing with gaff hook In fishing , a gaff is a pole with a sharp hook on the end that is used to stab a large fish and then lift the fish into the boat. Ideally, the hook is placed under the Vertebral column backbone . Gaffs are used when the weight of the fish exceeds the breaking point of the fishing line or the fishing pole . A gaff cannot be used if it is intended to release the fish unharmed after capture, unless the fish is skilfully gaffed in the lip, jaw, or lower gill using a thin gaff hook. A flying gaff is a specialized type of gaff used for securing and controlling very large fish. The hook part of the gaff the head detaches when sufficient force is used, somewhat like a Harpoon harpoon s dart. The head is secured to the boat with a length of heavy rope or cable. 1. Gaff vang

A gaff vang is a line on a gaff rig sailboat used to exert lateral force on the gaff and thus control the shape of the sail. Rarely used now they are commonly shown on old pictures and drawings. Typically separate port and starboard vangs were fitted. The primary purpose of the gaff vang is to reduce the twist in the sail caused by the boom sagging away to leeward ref name hrs Cunliffe, Tom 1992 . Hand, Reef and Steer, Adlard Coles Nautical, London, page 26. ref . This sag is the main cause of the gaff rig s poor performance to windward relative to the Bermuda rig . The gaff vang works well on a ketch or schooner, but is often found to be unleadable on a cutter ref name hrs Another use of the gaff vangs was to steady the gaff on a boomless gaff rig like a bawley when the sail is brailed up. A rope or tackle extended from the boom of a fore and aft mainsail to a deck fitting of a vessel when running, in order to keep the boom from riding up ref vang. Dictionary.com. 1. Penny gaff

A penny gaff was a popular entertainment for the lower classes in 19th century England . It consisted of short, theatrical entertainments which could be staged wherever space permitted, such as the back room of a public house or small hall. Unsophisticated, the props and scenery rarely consisted of more than a stage and a piano. The lessee of the venue would often stand by the stage, calling out when each act should finish in an attempt to maximise the evening s revenue. Clowning, dancing, singing and plays all featured in the penny gaffs. Easy to perform, well known to the audience, and with simple exciting stories, the deeds of famous highwayman highwaymen , robbers and murderers, such as those featured in The Newgate Calendar were popular subjects for the plays. The stories of the 18th century robber, Jack Sheppard who escaped from prison on numerous occasions, and the gory Red Barn Murder were among the most enduring. Mangled versions of William Shakespeare s plays were also regularly performed. The time constraints meant the stories would often become unrecognisable, with the final act performed in a flurry of activity. If the owner called time, the play would have to be concluded regardless of what point in the script the actors had reached. ref Mancroff and Trela, pp.99 100 ref As the gaffs became more popular, larger, more spacious venues opened to accommodate them. The Rotunda Assembly Room Rotunda in Blackfriars Road, the largest venue in London , could seat 1,000 people and at its peak exhibited shows lasting between an hour and two and a half hours. For the more discerning patron, it offered better seating at the price of twopence tuppence or British threepence coin threepence . ref Bratton, p.73 ref The established penny gaff theatres were feared as breeding grounds for criminals by the Victorian moral reformers, as, in the words of one city missionary no respectable ... . ref Shaftesbury, p.319 ref The name penny gaff derived from the entrance fee, which was normally ...   more details
