Military badges of the UnitedStates are awards authorized by the UnitedStates armed forces that signify rating, qualification, or accomplishment in several career fields, and also serve as identification devices for personnel occupying certain assignments. Personal recognition is granted to service members by a number of awards and decorations. Together with Awards and decorations of the UnitedStatesmilitarymilitary decorations , such badges are authorized for wear on military uniforms. Each of the five military services maintains a separate series of badges that may be awarded to service members. Various regulations exist on how badges are displayed, how many may be worn at one time, and whether or not such badges may be worn on the uniform of more than one branch of service. A UnitedStatesmilitary jury or Members , in military parlance serves a function similar to an American civilian jury , but with several notable differences. Unofficial decorations of the UnitedStatesmilitary are those Awards and decorations of the UnitedStatesmilitary awards and decorations that were authorized under military regulations, but never appeared on official precedence charts. Unofficial awards may also be bestowed for a one time action or be authorized under the authority of a local commander. Unofficial military awards were fairly common in the early 20th century, however in the modern age such decorations are rare due large in part to the stringent and specific regulations regarding the issuance of military decoration s and the manner of wear on military uniforms. The term may still be used, however, to denote decorations that were proposed for creation, but never actually distributed. During the Second World War the Office of Strategic Services OSS instituted a decoration dubbed Military Order of the White Peacock and awarded 49 of these silver medals to Kachin State Kachin guerillas fighting the Japanese in Burma.
