Built 1933 1944 by architect Sigurd Lewerentz and, until 1992, known as the Malm City Theatre accommodating several different organizations, the Opera House and Music Theatre is one of the largest auditoriums in Scandinavia with 1508 seats, created in the form of an enclosed amphitheatre in order to allow for the greatest viewing possibility. It is used for opera, operetta, and musical performances. Influenced by German director Max Reinhardt , a large revolving stage was constructed. The foyer is considered to be beautiful, with its open surfaces and marble staircases, and it is adorned with a number of works of art by artists such as Carl Milles and Isaac Gr newald . Local people call it the Opierny Teatr Belarusian or the Opera and Ballet Theatre. It opened at 25 May 1933, but it did not have its own building. Performances were presented at the Belarusian Drama Theatre until 1938. The theatre contains relief s by Zair Azgur . The first stationary theater was founded in Belarus in 1933 on the basis of the Belarusian opera and ballet school.
