Michael Cobb PhD FRICS 10 September 1916 23 June 2010 was a British Army officer and railway historian who served in the Second World War and later became the oldest person ever to be awarded a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2008, for his work The Railways of Great Britain A Historical Atlas which set out to map and record every railway station and line in existence in Britain between 1807 and 1994. Life Cobb was born in 1916 at Harrow Weald and attended Harrow School and read Mechanical Sciences at Magdalene College, Cambridge . On taking his degree in 1938, Cobb joined the Royal Engineers and in 1940 participated in the Battle of France and the Dunkirk evacuation . For the rest of the war, Cobb served with an airborne commando force, but he was never deployed in combat, his troopship being sunk in the Mediterranean Sea en route to the Far East in 1944. After the war he served in Burma and Egypt before becoming superintendent of the Royal School of Military Survey . He retired in 1965 as a colonel and spent some years as a professional cartographer before becoming fully retired in 1971. Cobb had been a lifelong railway enthusiast, and in 1978 he set about creating the most detailed study of the history and geography of British railways ever attempted. For 18 years he researched and wrote his atlas, completing it in 1996 and getting it published in 2004. Michael Sullivan born 1916 is a British art historian and one of the major Western pioneers in the field of modern History of Chinese art Chinese art history and criticism. Sullivan is a graduate of Rugby School and graduated from University of Cambridge Cambridge in architecture in 1939. He was in China from 1940 1946 with the International and Chinese Red Cross followed by teaching and doing museum work in Chengdu, where he met and married Wu Huan Khoan , a biologist who gave up her career to work with him. He received a PhD from Harvard University 1952 and a post doctoral Bollingen Fellowship. He subsequently taught in the University of Singapore, and returned to London in the 1960s to teach at the School of Oriental and African Studies . Then he became Head of the Department of Oriental Art at Stanford University from 1966 to 1984, before settling in University of Oxford Oxford as a Fellow by Special Election at St Catherine s College, Oxford St. Catherine s College . Early life and education Born in Freeland, Oxfordshire , Lewis was the second son of The Rev d Victor Arthur Nicholas Lewis, a church of England clergyman, and his wife Mary Ann Clayton Lewis. He was educated at Uppingham School and studied at Trinity College, Cambridge , where he took a Bachelor of Arts degree with honours in 1912 and a Master of Arts Oxbridge and Dublin Master of Arts in 1924. During the First World War , he served in the Royal Marines form 1914 to 1919, becoming a lieutenant . On 5 August 1933, he married Muriel Doris Cruikshank with whom he had a son and a daughter. Academic career Lewis spent his entire 42 year academic career in English naval colleges.
