The MayDayRiots of 1919 were a series of violent demonstrations that occurred throughout Cleveland, Ohio on May 1 MayDay , 1919. The riots began when Socialist leader, Charles Ruthenberg organized a MayDay parade of local trade Trades union unionists , socialism socialists , communism communists , and anarchism anarchists to protest the jailing of Eugene V. Debs . The previous year, Debs s Federal Court trial was held in Cleveland. The event was also aimed at helping promote Ruthenberg s own candidacy for mayor of Cleveland. The 32 groups were divided into four units, each holding a Socialist flag and an United States American flag at its head. As they marched to Cleveland s Public Square , one of the units was stopped on Superior Avenue by a group of Liberty bond Victory Liberty Loan workers, who demanded that they lower their flags. The marchers refused to do so and mass fighting broke out immediately chaos quickly spreading throughout the downtown area. Ruthenberg s party headquarters on Prospect Avenue was ransacked by a mob. Law was finally restored by mounted police, army trucks, and tanks. Casualties amounted to two people killed, forty injured, and 116 arrested one of them Ruthenberg himself on a charge of assault with intent to kill . Local newspapers quickly pointed out that only eight of those arrested were born in the United States . In response to the riots, the city government immediately passed laws to restrict parades and the display of red flag s. Overall, the occurrence is seen as the most violent of a series of similar disorders that took place throughout the U.S. as a result of the First Red Scare . MayDay is a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald published in Smart Set in 1920. Plot The story uses the MayDayRiots of 1919 as historical backdrop. During these events, as the lower class is fighting for certain causes, a group of privileged Yale alumni meet for a dance. History MayDay was sold directly to Smart Set before Fitzgerald had a literary agent later Harold Ober . It is noted that Fitzgerald based some of the events on those he experienced in New York City . ref http www.sc.edu fitzgerald mayday index.html MayDay An Introduction ref The city is detailed as both a source of unfathomable creative inspiration and horrid realities. The story is noteworthy for its length, the familiar themes of lost youth and wealth as well as two distinct yet interrelated plots. All were aspects Fitzgerald would revisit throughout his literary career. Fitzgerald described the story as illustrating a general hysteria...that inaugurated the Jazz Age... During the story a Jewish man is beat up by a crowd as he expounds socialist rhetoric. Fitzgerald, however, was not an anti semite, and his characterizing of the Jewish man can be seen as a commentary of the brutality of the crowd contrasted with the man s wit and fervor. ref Notes on F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Passing of the Great Race M Gidley Journal of American Studies , 1973 ref When asked if some of the story was autobiographical, Fitzgerald was evasive. He is attributed with saying there are no good biographies of novelists because they are so many people. ref Some sort of epic grandeur the life of F. Image Ickwell Maypole05.jpg thumbnail 220px Villagers and Morris men dancing by the Maypole on Ickwell Ickwell Green , on the morning of 1 May 2005 Ickwell May Day is a celebration of spring held at Ickwell in the civil parish parish of Northill Events and Amenities Northill . The earliest documented Ickwell May Day festivities were in 1565. By then it had become a Christian festival, though its origins likely pre date Christianity to the Celtic polytheism pagan Beltane festivals. In 1872 the squire of the town erected a permanent Maypole and left a bequest in his will to fund the annual celebration. Like many English festivals, the Ickwell May Day is usually accompanied by Morris dance Morris dancing in this case, the Ickwell Mayers, with their Lord and Lady, and the dirty faced Moggies. Many other customs associated with the day have been recorded over the years. One, unique to Ickwell, is that of the Old Scholars, a group of alumni of the village school. The Old Scholars dance around the maypole, some with two or even three generations of their offspring. In 1945, the Ickwell and District May Day Committee was formed. The Committee organizes the games, refreshments, contests, dances, music and other activities, including the crowning of the May Queen . Due to its documented age and long history, the Ickwell May Day has become something of an attraction, and is listed on the East of England Tourist Board s publicity sheet for May Day Bank Holiday in the East of England. TOCright MayDay is an early seventeenth century stage play, a comedy written by George Chapman that was first published in 1611 in literature 1611 . MayDay enters the historical record when it was printed in a book size quarto edition by the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers stationer John Browne. This was the sole edition of the play prior to the nineteenth century. The title page of the 1611 quarto identifies Chapman as the author, and states that the play was acted at the Blackfriars Theatre , meaning it was performed by the Children of the Chapel Children of the Blackfriars , the troupe of boy player boy actors that staged most of Chapman s early comedies. Date The date of the play s authorship and stage premier is a matter of dispute among scholars. The play s text shows a number of references, allusions, and borrowings from dramas current around the turn of the century, like John Marston s Antonio s Revenge 1600 in literature 1600 the play s parodies of passages in Hamlet , including the famous soliloquy, have been widely noted by commentators. So, some critics have agreed with Chapman scholar Thomas Marc Parrott T. M. Parrott in favoring a date of c. 1601 2. Yet the text also shows links with works current almost a decade later, like Thomas Dekker poet Thomas Dekker s The Gull s Hornbook 1609 in literature 1609 . One solution for this contradiction is the hypothesis, offered by Parrott, that Chapman wrote the play c. 1601 2 and then revised it for a new production c. 1609. May 13 Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969 is a book published in 2007 and written by activist and scholar Dr. Kua Kia Soong on the May 13 Incident of 1969. It was published by the human rights group Suaram on the 38th anniversary of the worst racial riot in Malaysia n history, which took place mostly in Kuala Lumpur . The official death toll was 196, but independent reporters and other observers estimated up to ten times as many people had died. Three quarters of the casualties were Chinese Malaysian s, and 6000 of them were left homeless after fires. As the title suggests, the book is based on declassified documents, which have become available at the Public Records Office at London . The book challenges the Malaysian government s official position on the cause of the May 13 Incident. At the time, the government stated the cause was opposition parties creating tensions after the 1969 elections. In contrast, Soong stated that the ascendent state capitalist class in the United Malays National Organisation UMNO , the party in power, had intentionally started the riot as a coup d etat to topple the Tunku , traditional Malay Rulers , from power. ref cite news url http www.thestar.com.my news story.asp?file 2007 5 14 nation 17718816&sec nation title Another look at incident on May 13 date 2007 05 14 publisher The Star ref ref Cite web url http www.jeffooi.com 2007 05 surviving the may 13 bloodshed.php title Surviving 38 years of the May 13 bloodshed author Jeff Ooi ... ap 2007 05 16 asia AS GEN Malaysia Race Riot Book.php title New book on 1969 race riots in Malaysia may be banned, officials warn publisher International Herald Tribune date 2007 05 16 accessdate 2007 ... 67280 title Ministry seizes controversial May 13 book publisher Malaysiakini date 2007 05 15 accessdate ...?products id 692&osCsid 1daa4e2e6f2160ca25757dbbebc6458c Synopsis MAY 13 Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969 , Kinibooks.
