Mathieud Escouchy Le Quesnoy , Nord department Nord , 1420 1482 was a Picardy Picard chronicler during the last stages of the Hundred Years War . His Chronique was a continuation of the chronicle of Enguerrand de Monstrelet , with manuscripts of which it occurs as a third volume it was edited by G. du Fresne de Beaucourt, 3 vols., Paris, Societ de l Histoire de France, 1863 64 . Matthieu covers the years 1444 67, from a point of view favourable to Duchy of Burgundy Burgundy , but with an attempt at impartiality, though he was in the service of Louis XI of France Louis XI , with whom he fought at the Montlh ry battle of Montlh ry 16 July 1465 , after which he was ennobled. Like most literate men of his time, he was fascinated by feats of arms, brave tourneys and the social stature of the men and a few women who figure in his chronicle. His account of the Banquet du Voeu du Faisan, describes the ceremonious feast held at Lille in 1454 by Philip III, Duke of Burgundy Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy , whose court set the standards for elegant extravagance in the fifteenth century. He was appointed Echevin and Pr v t of P ronne . He fell afoul of justice, was even arrested and tortured but set free at last. In Escouchy some editors read a variant of the familiar seigneurial name Coucy . Mathieu L veill 1709 September 9, 1743 was an executioner in Canada from 1733 to 1743, originally a Black slaves Black slave . After the death of the executioner Pierre Rattier on August 21, 1723, the colonial authorities of New France searched the colony in vain for a successor to him. Three years later they asked the minister of the Marine, Jean Fr d ric Ph lypeaux, Count of Maurepas Maurepas , to find a hangman for Canada in France. Maurepas replied, suggesting that they buy a Negro from Martinique , but quickly thought better of this idea and sent them a certain Gilles Lenoir, an inmate of the H pital G n ral of Paris. Gilles Lenoir was a confirmed drunkard and had to be kept in prison all year long. He proved useless as an executioner and was sent back to France in the autumn of 1730. Finally, on October 12, 1731, the colonial authorities decided to take the necessary measures to obtain a Negro from Martinique to act as executioner . On March 24, 1733 Maurepas asked Jacques Pannier d Orgeville, a royal official in Martinique, to send to Quebec the Negro slave requested by New France. On August 1, 1735 the treasurer general of the Marine, Barth lemy Moufle de La Tuillerie, paid 800 livres to buy L veill and send the slave to Quebec to serve as executioner. L veill had scarcely arrived in Quebec when he was hospitalized at the H tel Dieu de Qu bec H tel Dieu on July 31, 1733. Intendant Gilles Hocquart Hocquart thought he would make L veill happier by buying a West Indian wife for him. When she arrived in Canada in 1742, L veill was ill again. Refimprove date October 2010 File Mathieu Crickboom 1905.jpg thumb Mathieu Crickboom in 1905 Mathieu Crickboom 2 March 1871 30 October 1947 was a Belgium Belgian violin ist, who was born in Verviers Hodimont and died in Brussels . Crickboom was the principal disciple of Eug ne Ysa e , who dedicated to him his Sonata for Violin Alone No. 5 . In the same vein, Ernest Chausson dedicated his string quartet to Crickboom, who for some years played second violin in the Ysa e Quartet. He lived for a while in Barcelona , where he directed a violin school and a concert society. The year 1897 saw the formation of Crickboom s own quartet, with Pablo Casals , cello Josep Rocabruna, second violin and Rafael G lvez, viola . Having returned to Belgium, he became a professor at the Conservatoire of Li ge and, subsequently, at the Conservatoire of Brussels. It was in Brussels that he spent most of his later life. He edited numerous violin concertos by great composers of the 18th and 19th centuries, but his principal work was his violin method, arranged into progressive etudes , duos, popular melodies and technical themes. Most of the pieces in this method were by great violin pedagogues of the 19th century, though some were by Crickboom himself.
