  1. Valuation-based system

Orphan date December 2007 Context date October 2009 Valuation based system VBS is a framework for knowledge representation and inference. Real world problems are modeled in this framework by a network of interrelated entities, called variables. The relationships between variables possibly uncertain or imprecise are represented by the functions called valuations. The two basic operations for performing inference in a VBS are combination and marginalization. Combination corresponds to the aggregation of knowledge, while marginalization refers to the focusing coarsening of it. VBSs were introduced by Prakash P. Shenoy in 1989 as general frameworks for managing uncertainty in expert system s. Applications VBS are used for knowledge representation in expert systems and data fusion. 1. Chapman?Kolmogorov equation

In mathematics , specifically in probability theory and in particular the theory of Markovian stochastic process es, the Chapman Kolmogorov equation is an identity relating the joint probability distribution s of different sets of coordinates on a stochastic process. The equation was arrived at independently by both the British mathematician Sydney Chapman astronomer Sydney Chapman and the Russian mathematician Andrey Kolmogorov . Suppose that f sub i sub is an indexed collection of random variables, that is, a stochastic process. Let math p i 1, ldots,i n f 1, ldots,f n math be the joint probability density function of the values of the random variables f sub 1 sub to f sub n sub . Then, the Chapman Kolmogorov equation is math p i 1, ldots,i n 1 f 1, ldots,f n 1 int infty infty p i 1, ldots,i n f 1, ldots,f n ,df n math i.e. a straightforward marginalization probability marginalization over the nuisance variable . Note that we have not yet assumed anything about the temporal or any other ordering of the random variables&mdash the above equation applies equally to the marginalization of any of them. Application to Markov chains When the stochastic process under consideration is Markov chain Markovian , the Chapman Kolmogorov equation is equivalent to an identity on transition densities. In the Markov chain setting, one assumes that i sub 1 sub     ...    i sub n sub . Then, because of the Markov property , math p i 1, ldots,i n f 1, ldots,f n p i 1 f 1 p i 2 i 1 f 2 mid f 1 cdots p i n i n 1 f n mid f n 1 , math where the conditional probability math p i j f i mid f j math is the transition probability between the times math i j math . So, the Chapman Kolmogorov equation takes the form math p i 3 i 1 f 3 mid f 1 int infty infty p i 3 i 2 f 3 mid f 2 p i 2 i 1 f 2 mid f 1 , df 2. math In English, and informally, this says that the probability of going from state 1 to state 3 can be found from the probabilities of going from 1 to an intermediate state ...   more details

  1. Junction tree algorithm

The junction tree algorithm is a method used in machine learning for exact conditional probability marginalization in general graph mathematics graph s. In essence, it entails performing belief propagation on a modified graph called a junction tree . The basic premise is to eliminate cycle graph theory cycle s by clustering them into single nodes. Junction tree algorithm Hugin algorithm If the graph is directed then Moral graph moralize it to make it undirected Introduce the evidence Chordal graph Triangulate the graph to make it chordal Construct a junction tree from the triangulated graph we will call the vertices of the junction tree supernodes Propagate the probabilities along the junction tree via belief propagation Note that this last step is inefficient for graphs of large treewidth . Computing the messages to pass between supernodes involves doing exact marginalization over the variables in both supernodes. Performing this algorithm for a graph with treewidth k will thus have at least one computation which takes time exponential in k. 1. Antiprocess

Unreferenced date April 2008 Orphan date August 2007 att May 2008 Antiprocess is the preemptive recognition and marginalization of undesired information by the interplay of mental defense mechanisms the subconscious compromises information that would cause cognitive dissonance . It is often used to describe a difficulty encountered when people with sharply contrasting viewpoints are attempting and failing to discuss a topic. In other words, when one is debating with another, there may be a baffling disconnect despite his apparent understanding of the argument. Despite the apparently sufficient understanding to formulate counter arguments, the mind of the debater does not allow him to be swayed by that knowledge. There are many instances on the Internet where antiprocess can be observed, but the prime location to see it is in Usenet discussion groups, where discussions tend to be highly polarized. In such debates, both sides appear to have a highly sophisticated understanding of the other position, yet neither side is swayed. As a result, the debate can continue for years without any progress being made. Antiprocess occurs because the mind is capable of Human multitasking multitasking the mind has the innate capability to evaluate and select information at a preconscious level so that we are not overwhelmed with the processing requirements it is not feasible to maintain two contradictory beliefs at the same time it is not possible for people to be aware of every factor leading up to decisions they make people learn argumentatively effective but logically invalid defensive strategies such as rhetorical fallacies and people tend to favour strategies of thinking that have served them well in the past. the truth is just too unpalatable to the mind to accept. The ramifications of these factors are that people can be engaged in a debate sincerely, yet the appearances suggests that they are not. This can lead to acrimony if neither party is aware of antiprocess and does not ...   more details
