coord 50 42 N 2 54 W region GB type waterbody display title The LymeBay kayaking tragedy was the deaths of four teenagers on a sea kayak ing accident in the LymeBay area which led to legislation to regulate adventure activities centres working with young people in the UK. On 22 March 1993, a group of eight schoolchildren and their teacher were accompanied by two instructors from an outdoor centre on a kayak trip across LymeBay , on the south coast of England . As a result of a series of errors and circumstances, four of the teenagers drowned. The party had run into difficulties straight away as one kayak became swamped. The group was swept out to sea, where all their kayaks were quickly swamped. The subsequent trial resulted in the prosecution of the parent company and the centre manager. The owner of the activity centre and the centre itself were convicted of corporate manslaughter England and Wales corporate manslaughter over the deaths. This was the first conviction for this offence in the UK. The owner was jailed for three years, but his sentence was cut to two years on appeal. This Tragedy event tragedy accelerated governmental discussions to end self regulation of outdoor education centres. The Activity Centres Young Persons Safety Act 1995 was passed through Parliament of the United Kingdom Parliament in January 1995 and an independent licensing authority, the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority AALA was formed, funded by the Department of Education and Employment DFE and under the guidance of the Health and Safety Executive ref cite web title From LymeBay to Licensing publisher Health and Safety Executive url http www.aals.org.uk lymebay01.html accessdate 2010 02 20 ref . Parts of the forest remain and its name is preserved in many local place names. Location The Forest of Lyme probably named so after the abundance of lime tree s in it was a historic tract of forest land stretching from Ashton under Lyne all the way roughly along Cheshire s border to the town of Audlem on the Cheshire Shropshire border. It takes in the modern towns and villages of Ashton under Lyne, Macclesfield , Lyme, Congleton , Madeley, Staffordshire Madeley , Newcastle under Lyme and others. History In historical times the forest was inhabited by the British Celt s who would have been a part of the Cornovii tribe, or more probably the Brigantes tribe. The Forest seemed to act as a barrier to Anglo Saxon conquest of England Anglo Saxon conquest of Cheshire because when Cheshire finally came under Anglo Saxon control, the army which effectively captured it came from the North. There is also a lot of evidence for the survival of a Celtic Cultured enclave in the forest.
