  1. Pair trawling

Image Dicentrarchus labrax.jpg thumb right 250px The European seabass Dicentrarchus labrax , once target of a pair trawl fishery in the English Channel , now banned due to the high level of cetacean bycatch Pair trawling is a fishing activity carried out by two boats, with one towing each wikt warp warp the towing cables . As the mouth of the Fishing net net is kept open by the lateral pull of the individual vessels, Bottom trawling Otter trawling otter boards are not required. By utilising the towing power of two boats, and as no otter boards are needed, a larger net may be worked than would otherwise be possible, or alternatively, the two boats can share increased fuel efficiency ref sains . As doors are not necessary, the gear arrangements are simplified, with the warps attaching directly to the wings of the net. Setting and hauling of the nets are carried out by one boat, while the other is only used for towing usually each will take turns at these operations ref sains . Pair trawling is effective on all demersal species. In shallow waters, where the noise from a single vessel may scatter fish, two vessels operating a distance apart tend to herd fish into the path of the net. Catch per vessel often considerably exceeds that attainable through standard bottom trawling . Pair trawlers targeting cod off the coast of New England have reported average per vessel catches of three to six times that from single trawls ref Sainsbury, J.C. 1996 Commercial Fishing Methods 3rd edition . Fishing News Books, Oxford, UK. ISBN 0852382170 ref . Because of the increased efficiency of pair trawling, vessels are able to tow their gears in mid water at a faster speed to target species which are normally able to escape trawl nets, such as the European seabass . This has caused some controversy, due to the high level of marine mammal bycatch associated, leading to the British government introducing a ban on pair trawling for bass in UK territorial waters ref The South west Territorial ...   more details

Disease Pasteurellosis is also described as photobacteriosis due to the change in the taxonomic position , is caused by the halophilic bacterium Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida formerly Pasteurella piscicida . It was first isolated in mortalities occurring in natural populations of white perch Morone americanus and striped bass M. saxatilis in 1963 in Chesapeake Bay , USA Snieszko et al. , 1964 . Since 1969, this disease has been one of the most important in Japan, affecting mainly yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata Kusuda & Yamaoka, 1972 . From 1990 it has caused economic losses in different European countries including France Baudin Laurencin et al. , 1991 , Italy Ceschia et al. , 1991 , Spain Toranzo et al. , 1991 , Greece Bakopoulos et al. , 1995 , Turkey Canand et al. , 1996 , Portugal Baptista et al. , 1996 and Malta Bakopoulos et al. , 1997 . Gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata , seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and sole Solea spp. are the most affected species in Europe Mediterranean countries, as well as hybrid striped bass M. saxatilis x M. chrysops in the USA. However, the natural hosts of the pathogen are a wide variety of marine fish Romalde & Magari os, 1997 . This pathology is temperature dependent and occurs usually when water temperatures rise above 18 20 C. Below this temperature, fish can harbour the pathogen as subclinical infection and become carriers for long time periods Romalde, 2002 .
