  1. Wildlife of Cambodia

unreferenced date October 2010 Image Tigergebiss.jpg thumb right 200px Tiger Cambodia is home to a diverse array of wildlife. There are 212 mammal species, 536 bird species, 240 reptile species, 850 freshwater fish species Tonl Sap Lake area , and 435 marine fish species. Many of the country s species are recognized by the IUCN or World Conservation Union as threatened, endangered, or critically endangered due to deforestation and habitat destruction, poaching, the illegal wildlife trade , and farming, fishing, and forestry concessions. Intensive poaching may have already driven Cambodia s national animal, the Kouprey , to extinction, and wild tigers, Eld s deer, wild water buffaloes and hog deer are at critically low numbers. Wildlife in Cambodia includes dholes, elephants, deer sambar, Eld s deer, hog deer and muntjac , wild oxen banteng and gaur , panthers, bears, and tigers. Cormorants, cranes, ibises, parrots, green peafowl, pheasants, and wild ducks are also found, and poisonous snakes are numerous. Deforestation , mining activities, and unregulated hunting, have diminished the country s wildlife diversity rapidly. Fortunately, much work is being done in this area to help conserve and protect Cambodia s unique wildlife. Wildlife conservation organizations operating in Cambodia include Conservation International , World Wildlife Fund , the Wildlife Conservation Society , Fauna and Flora International , Frontier the Society for Environmental Exploration , BirdLife International , Wildlife Alliance , and many others. It has an area of about 720  km and protects one of the largest areas of lowland tropical rainforest s left in Vietnam. History Cat Tien national park was protected initially in 1978 as two sectors, Nam Cat Tien and Tay Cat Tien . Another sector, Cat Loc , was gazetted as a Rhinoceros Reserve in 1992 upon the discovery of a population of the Vietnamese Javan Rhinoceros , an occasion that brought the park into the world s eye. The three areas were combined to form one park in 1998. The park suffered historically during the Vietnam War when it was extensively sprayed with herbicide s like the defoliant Agent Orange however, further damage was done by logging up until the 1980s. To this day these areas have extensive bamboo and grassland cover and trees have not yet grown back. Archaeology Cat Tien archaeological site Biodiversity Cat Tien National Park consists of Tropical forests evergreen tropical and Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests deciduous forest, dominated by Dipterocarpaceae , Fabaceae and Lythraceae especially Lagerstroemia spp. , with 40 of the park comprising bamboo woodland, and the remaining 10 farmland, wetland s and grassland. The park fauna includes impressive, albeit threatened megafauna as Javan Rhinoceros one of only two populations in the world , Asian Elephant s, and Sun Bear s.
