Otherusesof Kostroma Image Maslenitsa effigy.jpg right thumb 200px A Kostroma straw effigy from contemporary Russia Kostroma is a straw scarecrow of a girl burnt by East Slavs during the carnival season, or Maslenitsa . There are various interpretations of the custom. Some scholars believe that the scarecrow symbolizes Mokosh . Others regard kostroma burning as a sacrifice to Jarilo . It is assumed that the custom of burning a scarecrow replaced the human sacrifice formerly practised by Slavic pagans. ref name book The Peasant in Nineteenth century Russia, edited W Vucinich 1968 ref Today, many celebrations burn scraps of paper on which are written sins along with the effigy in a bonfire. In modern Russian language Russian , the word denotes a children s game where one of the players fakes their own death, and then tries to startle others who come to investigate. It may also denote a person who died violently and whose corpse may be harmful to the living. In some Russia n villages, a kostroma corpse is buried solemnly on Whitsuntide Eve. In other areas, a kostroma is burned at the feast of John the Baptist , or Ivan Kupala . The term is probably cognate to the Slavic word for bonfire kostjor in Russian kost meaning bone . It is also likely that the Kostroma River and the town of Kostroma were named after the ancient custom. It is situated in Kostroma and is known as the location of the ancient Feodorovskaya Icon of Theotokos God s Mother . The male Bogoyavlensky Monastery was founded in the 15th century by Nikita, a disciple and a relative of St Sergius of Radonezh . The five domed katholikon of traditional Byzantine design was constructed under Ivan the Terrible , starting in 1559. The Tsar accused the father superior and some of the brethren of supporting his rival Vladimir of Staritsa and had them executed in 1570. The monastery was besieged and taken by Aleksander J zef Lisowski during the Time of Troubles . The attack claimed the lives of 11 monks. A monastic house dates from the 17th century. The other buildings arose from the monastery s reconstruction in the Russian Revival style in the late 19th century. After the Revolution the monastery was abolished and was not revived as a nunnery until the 1990s. The remains of the wall paintings in the katholikon were destroyed in a recent fire.
