for the band Grinderswitch Unreferenced date February 2009 Grinder s Switch is a real location just outside of Centerville, Tennessee , which consists of little more than the railroad switch for which it is named. It was also the fictional hometown of Minnie Pearl , the comic character portrayed on the Grand Ole Opry by comedian Sarah Ophelia Colley Cannon, who grew up in the nearby Colleyville neighborhood of Centerville. Her father was a lumberman who shipped logs from the Grinders depot on the Centerville branch of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway . There was a team track at the depot, necessitating the installation of a switch. Long after the depot disappeared, the team track and its switch remained, thus the name Grinders Switch. Grinders was still listed in the railroad tariff book called Official List of Open & Prepay Stations No. 82 dated November 15, 1967. Sarah Colley sometimes accompanied her father to the Grinders depot, where the local characters would hang out. This was part of her inspiration for her Cousin Minnie Pearl routine. So much unwarranted traffic to Grinder s Switch, looking for the hometown Pearl described, was generated by tourists following the road sign, that the Hickman County, Tennessee Hickman County Highway Department was finally motivated to change the designation on the sign to Hickman Springs Road. A Grinder s Switch Amusement park theme park for the area has been proposed, with promoters going so far as to move the former railroad depot of Slayden, Tennessee to the area to serve as one of its buildings, but little more seems to have been done in regard to developing the park to this point. Unreferenced date September 2009 A jig grinder is a machine tool used for grinding complex shapes and holes where the highest degrees of accuracy and finish are required. The jig grinder is very similar to a jig borer , in that the table positioning and spindles are very accurate far more so than a manual milling machine or lathe . It is almost exclusively used by tool and die makers in the creation of jigs or mating holes and pegs on dies. There are usually many peripheral elements to a large jig grinder, including separate hydraulic motors, air compressors, and various cooling systems for both the hydraulic circuit and supplying coolant to the work and machine itself. The machine operates by a high speed air spindle rotating a grinding bit. The air spindles are removable and interchangeable to achieve varying surface speeds. In linguistics , the term universal grinder refers to an idea that in some languages, most count noun s can be used as if they were mass noun s, which causes a slight change in their meaning. The term universal grinder was first used in print by F. Jeffry Pelletier in 1975, after a personal suggestion by David Lewis. ref Pelletier, F. Jeffry Non singular reference some preliminaries . In Philosophia Vol. 5 No. 4 Pp. 451 465, October 1975. ref The idea of the universal grinder is that while count nouns usually denote whole, distinct objects such as a dog , two dogs , the equivalent mass noun connotes a non distinct amount of whatever constitutes these objects, especially that it is unclear how many even if an integral number at all of these objects it constitutes. Because of this change of meaning, sentences made using the universal grinder can sometimes appear unappealing, for example I went to the site of the traffic accident, and there was dog lying all over the road. While the universal grinder can be used in many Indo European language s, most particularly English language English and Dutch language Dutch , it does not work with all languages, because of their different morphology linguistics morphology . For example, Mandarin Chinese has no grammatical distinction between count nouns and mass nouns, the difference is inferred from context, and thus the universal grinder would not have the effect described above. ref Cheng, Lisa L.S., Doetjes, Jenny, and Sybesma, Rint How universal is the Universal Grinder? Wet grinders have a wide application in industry, workshops, and commercial and domestic kitchens throughout Africa and Asia. Kitchen wet grinders are very popular tools in the South Indian kitchen used to make paste out of soaked cereal grain s and lentil s. File Grinding stone.jpg left thumb South Indian style Wet grinding stone At one time, a wet grinder consisted of a large rock with a hole in it, where a cylindrical rock with a wooden handle fit in. The grain and lentil mixture was poured in with water and the cylinder rotated by the handle on the top to grind the food together. The ground paste is used for various food items like idli , dosa , sevai and vada . The evolution of grinders have a dramatic change in the working. The earlier form of wet grinder called Attu Kallu used mechanical energy in which the user had to rotate the top stone called Kullavi to grind the medium. The harnessing of electricity led to the development of electric powered wet grinders. By this invention, the powered wet grinders have both the top and the base stone rotating. These electric models were first introduced in restaurants, and later moved into the home. Most modern models still have stone components for the grinding action. The stone is usually granite . The old manual grinding stones used to be refinished for better results. Modern stones usually don t need refinishing, as they last much longer. A concrete grinder can come in many configurations, the most common being a hand held Angle grinder , but it may be a specialized tool for countertop s or worktops. There are also purpose built floor grinders that are used for grinding and polishing marble, granite and concrete. Machines that grind concrete floors are usually made to handle much more stress and will have more power to drive the unit as concrete has a much higher sliding friction than marble or granite which is also worked wet, therefore with less friction. In fact some types of marble will spark when it is ground dry, causing deep damage to the marble surface. All concrete grinders use some sort of abrasive to grind or polish such as diamond tool s or Silicon carbide . The diamond tool s used for grinding are usually diamond grinding cup wheel s, and for polishing are usually diamond polishing pads. Concrete is usually ground dry for convenience, because it can be done with fewer people than wet grinding although a HEPA filter equipped vacuum is needed to capture the fine dust produced. Of course concrete can also be ground wet in which case no vacuum is used. Fine concrete dust contains silica which is very harmful to the lungs and can lead to silicosis so all effort should be made to avoid breathing concrete dust. For green building methods many Who date August 2010 have seen the benefit of using concrete grinders that are designed for wet grinding. These machines do not require electricity and are run on alternative fuels. The picture on the right is an example of a concrete floor grinder.
