    James Dyce Nicol 13 August 1805 16 November 1872 was an English Liberal Party UK Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom House of Commons from 1865 to 1872. Nicol was the son of W. Nicol M.D. of Stonehaven and his wife Margaret Dyce daughter of J. Dyce of Aberdeen. He was educated at the University of Glasgow and lived at Bombay for many years. Following active service in Europe as a professional soldier under Gustavus Adolphus , King of Sweden, he attained the rank of Colonel and fought in the English Civil War on the side of the Charles I England King . In 1647 he purchased the lands and barony of Urie in Kincardineshire from William Keith, 7th Earl of Marischal. As a known associate of the William Keith, 7th Earl Marischal Earl Marischal he was subsequently confined in Edinburgh Castle where he was converted to Quakerism in 1665 by the celebrated laird of Swinton , who was confined in the same prison. Grant was born 26 May 1805 at his father s farm of Affrusk in Kincardineshire . As a child he was employed on the farm in the summer, and during the winter picked up what learning he could at a village school. When only fourteen he began to write verses. In 1831 he was engaged as assistant to a shopkeeper at Stonehaven , and afterwards was employed as a clerk at Dundee , first in the office of The Guardian the Guardian newspaper, and then in that of a writer to the signet. He died 14 April 1835 at Affrusk. Grant s poems, often, like his prose tales, of much merit, were mainly written in Scots, but some are in English. Besides tales and sketches contributed to Chambers s Journal between 1830 and 1835, he published 1. Juvenile Lays, 1828. 2. Kincardineshire Traditions, 1830, in verse. At the time of his death he was preparing 3. Tales of the Glens with Ballads and Songs. This collection was published in 1836, with a memoir of the author by R. Nicoll. There is a memorial to him in the graveyard at Strachan, Aberdeenshire Erected by his father and mother, Robert and Isabel Grant . It is inscribed In memory of Joseph Grant, author of Tales of the Glens and other pieces in prose and verse, who died 14th April 1935 aged 30 years . Falconer was the eldest son of Sir Alexander Falconer of Halkertoun, by his wife Agnes, eldest daughter of Sir David Carnegie of Colluthie. On 9 July 1639 he succeeded Lord Woodhall as an ordinary lord of session, and in November 1641 was appointed anew by king and parliament to be judge ad vitam aut culpam. He represented Kincardineshire Parliament of Scotland constituency Kincardineshire in the convention 1643 4, and in the parliaments of 1644 5, 1645 7. He was a commissioner for the loan and tax in 1643, and a member of the committee of war for Kincardineshire in 1643, 1644, and 1646, and for Forfarshire in 1648. He was a commissioner for the plantation of kirks in 1644, a commissioner of the exchequer in 1645, a member of the committee of estates in 1645 and 1647, and a colonel for Aberdeenshire in 1648. On 20 Dec. 1647 he was created Lord Falconer of Halkerton , but on 15 Feb. 1649 he was deprived of his seat in the College of Justice , and ordained to lend money for the public use, on account of his accession to the engagement. He appears, however, as Baron Falconer in the list of Scots nobility in 1650, and was a commissioner of supply for Kincardineshire in 1656 and 1659. He was reappointed to his seat in the College of Justice at the Restoration, and retained it till his death. In 1661 he was a commissioner of excise, and a member of the commission for visiting the university of Aberdeen . He appears as sitting in parliament as Lord Halkertoun till 1669, and died 1 October 1671. He married Anne, only daughter of John, ninth lord Lindsay of Byres, by whom he had one son and one daughter.
