  1. Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder , or ASKAP, is a new radio telescope being built by CSIRO at the Murchison, Western Australia Murchison Radio astronomy Observatory in Western Australia . It was funded in 2008 for 100m by the Australian Federal Government as part of Australia s bid to host the international radio telecope, the Square Kilometre Array . Construction started in 2009, completion is expected in 2012, and it will mainly be used to make deep surveys of the sky at radio wavelengths. ASKAP will consist of an array of radio telescope dishes employing advanced Focal Plane Arrays phased array feeds to give a wide field of view 30 square degrees . ASKAP will be built on the Australian Boolardy site. Completion of the array which covers the frequency range 700 to 1,700  MHz is scheduled for 2012. ref http www.atnf.csiro.au projects askap ASKAP website ref ASKAP ref http adsabs.harvard.edu abs 2007PASA...24..174J Johnston et al. 2007 ref ref http adsabs.harvard.edu abs 2008ExA....22..151J Johnston et al. 2008 ref ref http adsabs.harvard.edu abs 2009IEEEP..97.1507D DeBoer et al. 2009 ref will consist of 36 12 metre antennas spread over a region 8 km in diameter. Although the array of antennas is no larger than many existing radio telescopes, the feed array at the focus of each antenna is revolutionary, with a phased array feed PAF of about 100 dual polarisation pixels, designed to work at a wavelength of about 20 cm. This will replace the single pixel feeds that are almost universal in current generation radio telescopes. As a result, ASKAP will have a thirty square degree field of view, enabling it to survey the sky some thirty times faster than existing radio telescopes, and allowing surveys of a scope that cannot be contemplated with current generation telescopes. Expressions of Interest for survey proposals with ASKAP were sought in November 2008, and full proposals were solicited in mid 2009. Of the 38 initial expressions of interest, ten proposals ...   more details
