  1. Civil laws regarding Kashrut

Civil laws regarding Kashrut Jewish religious standards, kosher food mainly concerning food are found in several countries. Advertising standards laws in many jurisdictions prohibit the use of the phrase kosher in a product s labelling, unless it can be shown that the product conforms to Jewish dietary laws however, the legal qualifications for conforming to Jewish dietary laws are often defined differently in different jurisdictions. For example, in some places the law may require that a rabbi certify the kashrut nature, in others the rules of kosher are fully defined in law, and in others still it is sufficient that the manufacturer only believes that the product complies with Jewish dietary regulations. In several cases, laws restricting the use of the term kosher have later been determined to be illegal religious interference. ref See Mark A. 1. Vaad

For the Va adat Ezrah Vehatzalah , known as the Vaad , see Aid and Rescue Committee Vaad is a Hebrew language Hebrew term for a council of rabbi s. It is a diasporic phenomenon, having no precedent in Talmud ic times. A Vaad has different responsibilities from a beth din rabbinical court . TOC Historical Older examples include the Council of Four Lands . Since the Haskalah Enlightenment and the subsequent emancipation of Jews living in European nations, Jewish communities no longer have their own autonomous governments, and vaads with governmental powers no longer exist. Vaads still exist as rabbinical councils, each with its own purview. Some deal with maintaining communal standards of kashrut kosher food others deal with communal standards of marriage, divorce and conversion to Judaism . More is needed here. Modern day Modern day vaads in Orthodox Judaism include the Vaad Halakha and the Beth Din of America, both sponsored by the Rabbinical Council of America . Another example is the Vaad Harabonim, part of the Rabbinical Council of New England. It supervises the kashrut of foods for many food manufacturers in New England , USA. More is needed here. 1. Cultural Judaism

refimprove date October 2010 Jews and Judaism sidebar denominations Cultural Judaism , often confused with Secular Judaism , is a stream of Judaism that encourages individual thought and understanding in Judaism. Its relation to Judaism is through the history, culture, civilization, ethical values and shared experiences of the Jewish people. Cultural Jews connect to their heritage not through religious beliefs but rather through the languages, literature, art, dance, music, food, and celebrations of the Jewish people. It is a pillar in the ideologies of Habonim Dror . Example The following is an example of how a Cultural Jew would approach a particular custom or law in Judaism, in this example kashrut ref http www.habodror.org.uk documents CJprint.pdf Cultural Judaism Chover , Habonim Dror United Kingdom, retrieved October 9, 2006 ref Go back to the source s and find out why it is done. If you agree with what the source s are saying and therefore find meaning in the practise, then kashrut has just become not only a meaningful Jewish practise in your life, but has also caused you to look deeper into Judaism and probably helped strengthen your Jewish identity. If the source doesn t appeal to you, can you find an alternative Jewish source to help you out with another way to practise some form of kashrut? Is there a non Jewish source that could help you out with your dilemma? If the whole practise is devoid of meaning, or you are against the practise for any reason then don t do it any more. But at least you will have enriched your Jewish knowledge and hopefully your Jewish identity. The implications of the choice are these If your family decided to change their Shabbat activity from a Friday night. 1. OK Kosher Certification

unreferenced date August 2009 Image OK logo.jpg thumb The kosher symbol of OK Organized Kashrut OK Kosher Certification is one of the major Hechsher kosher certification agencies. Early history In 1935 , Abraham Goldstein founded Organized Kashrut Laboratories OK Labs to meet the American Jewish community s need for Kosher food products. In 1968, Rabbi Bernard Levy purchased OK Labs. He was already involved in kosher certification several years prior to the purchase. At the time, it was certifying a relatively small number of companies, but under his leadership, the organization began to grow, certifying companies internationally. Rabbi Levy instituted several improvements in the methods employed by kosher certifying agencies to verify the nature of products. Until then, many ingredients of products were assumed to be kosher, without visiting the company of each one. His policy was to travel to each company to see how the production was done first hand. This led him to further investigate other companies, as many ingredients were composed of other sub ingredients. As the organization grew, and the workload increased, Rabbi Levy s son, Rabbi Don Yoel Levy, joined the OK to help expand the organization. http www.okkosher.com Content.asp?ID 156 1 Today After the death of Rabbi Bernard Levy in 1987, his son Rabbi Don Yoel Levy assumed leadership of the organization.
