Built by Military Engineer Robert Smith in 1835, the gate is so named because it used to start a road that led to Kashmir . Today it is also the name surrounding locality in North Delhi , in the Old Delhi area, and an important road junction as the Red Fort , ISBT and Delhi Junction railway station lie in its vicinity. He has authored various literary works such as Mushkilatul Qur an an explanation of the Qur an , Faidhul Bari Arabic commentary of Sahih ul Bukhari , Anwarul Bari Urdu commentary of Sahih ul Bukhari , Khatimun Nabiyyin, Aqidatul Islam fi Hayaatul Isa AS , and At Tasrih bima Tawattur fi Nudhoolul Masih. A number of his works in Urdu, Arabic, and Persian on various Islamic topics have been published, but more still await publication. Teaching and activities During his lifetime, he was the head teacher of Darul Uloom Deoband. He actively participated in the Khatm e Nubuwwat Movement and served Islam in politics through his position on the Jamiat Ulema e Hind. In politics, he was a follower of the example of his teacher, Moulana Mahmood ul Hasan . He considered it the Ulama s foremost obligation to create a true Islamic life for Indian Muslims. His zest for knowledge was so dominant in him that, for a prolonged period of time, the thought of marriage would perturb him. However, at the emphatic insistence of the elders, he adopted the conjugal union and thereafter started to accept a salary.
