    Aral Karakum is a desert in Kazakhstan , situated northeast of the Aral Sea . It borders on the Syr Darya river to the south. The desert covers an area of 40,000  km . The landscape in the region is quite flat, with a height that varies from 55 to 118  meters AMSL. The dune s can reach heights of around 25  meters. The area is very dry, and the dried out riverbeds usually only carry water during springtime, when the winter snow melts. Annual precipitation is around 120  mm. The winter lasts from mid November to mid March, with varying cloud cover and frequent fog . Mean temperature during daytime is minus 5 10  C, and at night around 25  C. The lowest recorded temperature is 42  C. However, at any time during winter, mild weather is possible. Precipitation falls mostly in the winter as snow. Snow cover is usually around 15  cm deep, but can reach 30  cm. Summer lasts from May to mid September. Daytime temperatures normally range 30 35  C, but temperatures up to 43  C have been recorded. At night the temperature drops to 15 18  C. During summer there are often dry winds and dust storm s. The Aral Karakum has some vegetation, mainly grass es, and it is being used for grazing of sheep .     The Trans Karakum Railway is a convert 540 km mi 0 abbr on long railway in the Central Asia central Asian republic of Turkmenistan . The railway was officially completed on 19 February 2006. The railway took over 1,500 workers more than five years to build, with 800 contractors working in the harsh conditions of the Karakum Desert . The railway was built using no foreign specialists only companies and contractors from Turkmenistan were used. The opening ceremony was held at I oguz formerly Darvaza , where a white marble railway station with a capacity of 100 people a day was built for the event. The railway takes 12 hours to traverse, halving the previous travel time between the two cities of Ashgabat and Dashoguz by replacing the route from through Mary Province Mary and Lebap Province Lebap provinces and along the border with Uzbekistan with one convert 700 km mi 0 abbr on shorter. There are 17 stations along the entire route, some serving existing villages, and others serving as a drop off point for planned villages. Over 130 bridges span the various water features, and a new highway is also being constructed alongside the railway. It is the third large scale project implemented since Turkmenistan s independence.
