Idiopathic is an adjective used primarily in medicine meaning arising spontaneously or from an obscure or unknown cause . From Greek language Greek , idios one s own , pathos suffering , it means approximately a disease of its own kind . It is technically a term from nosology , the classification of disease. For some medical conditions, one or more causes are somewhat understood, but in a certain percentage of people with the condition, the cause may not be readily apparent or characterized. In these cases, the origin of the condition is said to be idiopathic. With some medical conditions, the medical community cannot establish a root cause for a large percentage of all cases for example, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis , the majority of which are idiopathic ref name Daskalakis 2006 cite journal author Daskalakis N, Winn M title Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis journal Cell Mol Life Sci volume 63 issue 21 pages 2506 11 year 2006 pmid 16952054 doi 10.1007 s00018 006 6171 y ref with other conditions, however, idiopathic cases account for a small percentage for example, pulmonary fibrosis . ref name MLP cite web title Medical Encyclopedia Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis work MedlinePlus url http www.nlm.nih.gov medlineplus ency article 000069.htm accessdate 2007 02 13 ref As medical and scientific advances are made with relation to a particular condition or disease, more root causes are discovered, and the percentage of cases designated as idiopathic shrinks. Orphan date October 2008 Shoulder arthritis can be one of three types of arthritis in the glenohumeral joint of the shoulder. The glenohumeral joint is a ball and socket joint, which relies on cartilage to move smoothly and to operate normally. Forms Shoulder arthritis is a clinical condition in which the joint that connects the ball of the arm bone humeral head to the shoulder blade socket glenoid has damaged or worn out cartilage. Normally the ends of the bone are covered with hyaline articular cartilage, a surface so smooth that the friction at the joint is less than that of an ice skate on ice. Idiopathic hypoglycemia is, literally, a medical condition in which the glucose level in the blood blood glucose is abnormally low due to an undeterminable cause. This is considered an incomplete and unsatisfactory medical diagnosis diagnosis by physicians and is rarely used by endocrinologist s, as it implies an unfinished diagnostic evaluation. In general, the more severe the hypoglycemia and the more clearly it is proven, the less likely it is to remain idiopathic . Idiopathic hypoglycemia can also be a synonym for reactive hypoglycemia or for hypoglycemia that is not diagnosed by a physician and does not fulfill the Whipple triad criteria. Juveniles sometimes look very different from the adult form, particularly in terms of their colour. In many organisms the juvenile has a different name from the adult see also List of animal names . Some organisms reach maturity in a short metamorphosis , such as eclosion in many insect s. For others, the transition from juvenile to fully mature is a more prolonged process &ndash puberty for example. In such cases, juveniles during this transformation are sometimes called subadults . Many invertebrate s, on reaching the adult stage, are fully mature and their development and growth stops. Juvenile refers to the larva or comparable stages in such taxa . In vertebrate s and some invertebrates e.g. spider s , larval forms e.g. tadpole s are usually considered a development stage of their own, and juvenile refers to a post larval stage that is not fully grown and not sexually mature. In amniote s and most plant s, the embryo represents the larval stage. Here, juvenile in general applies to the time between hatching birth germination and reaching maturity.
