    The Rosenwald Fund also known as the Rosenwald Foundation , the Julius Rosenwald Fund , and the Julius Rosenwald Foundation was established in 1917 by Julius Rosenwald and his family for the well being of mankind. Julius Rosenwald , an American tailor clothier , became part owner of Sears, Roebuck and Company in 1895, and eventually served as its president from 1908 to 1922, and chairman of its Board of Directors until his death in 1932. He became interested in social issues, especially education for African American s, and provided funding through Dr. Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute , a historically black college HBCU , prior to founding the fund. Unlike other endowed foundations, which were designed to fund themselves in perpetuity, the Rosenwald Fund was intended to use all of its funds for philanthropic purposes. It donated over 70 million to Public school government funded public schools , colleges and universities , museums , Jewish Charitable trust charities , and black institutions before funds were completely depleted in 1948. The rural school building program for African American children was one of the largest programs administered by the Rosenwald Fund. Over 4.4 million in matching funds stimulated construction of more than 5,000 one room school s and larger ones , as well as shops and teachers homes, mostly in Southern United States the South . History James Haskell Hope , the South Carolina Superintendent of Education from 1922 to 1945, sold more than convert 2 acre m2 of his land for the gift like price of 5 to the Trustees of School District No. 60 for Newberry County, South Carolina in 1925. Pioneers in Education , http www.riversidereader.com The Riverside Reader , February 11, 2008, p. 1 ref was a school located on Louisiana Highway 10 in the city of New Roads, Louisiana . The school was originally opened in 1948 as New Roads Rosenwald Elementary School and was located on upper Cemetery Street. It was as an all black school that went up through the seventh grade. In 1950, an all black high school was opened in New Roads. This new school was the first all black high school in Pointe Coupee Parish. It was named New Roads High School. The name was later changed to simply Rosenwald High School. In 1980, Rosenwald High was partnered with, the mostly white, Poydras High School as part of a desegreation plan similar to the plan involving Batchelor High School and Innis High School . After Poydras High closed in 1981, Rosenwald became the only public high school in New Roads, and the only magnet high school in the parish. It was a high school in the Pointe Coupee Parish Public School system until after the 1990 91 school year, when the high school was closed down as part of a plan to combine all parish public schools into the newly formed Pointe Coupee Central High School . The property contains two buildings that are both associated with the Tuskegee Syphilis Study . The church building is a gable front frame building with a frame bell tower serving as a prominent landmark along the highway. The building has been sided in vinyl, c. 1990, but the interior of the building retains its c. 1916 appearance, complete with decorative painted graining on doors, pews, wainscoting, and other defining features of the building. The Rosenwald School, built c. 1922 and remodeled c. 1936, retains its historical and architectural integrity from the 1930s when a New Deal agency expanded the industrial room and made other interior and exterior changes. The Rosenwald School is undergoing renovation as of February 2011 . Both buildings have been listed in the Alabama State Historic Register.
