  1. Joint Stock Theatre Company

The Joint Stock Theatre Company was founded in London 1974 by David Hare dramatist David Hare , Max Stafford Clark and David Aukin . The director William Gaskill was also an important part of the company. It was primarily a new work company. As its title suggests, it was run as a Joint stock company the capital of the company being formed by the contribution of each member, its profit was to be measured in the success of its productions. Thus, it became cooperatively owned by its members. What their contribution was and whether it included the actors in lieu of their salaries was not revealed, nor was what the union British Actors Equity Association Equity had to say about it. Joint Stock created a distinctive style of working with writers using company research to inspire workshops. From these workshops writers such as David Hare dramatist David Hare , Howard Brenton and Caryl Churchill would garner material to inspire a writing phase before rehearsals began. This methodology is sometimes referred to as The Joint Stock Method. Key productions include Hare s Fanshen , Brenton s Epsom Downs play Epsom Downs and Churchill s Cloud Nine play Cloud Nine . The company closed in 1989. In 1993 Max Stafford Clark founded the touring company Out of Joint theatre company Out of Joint . Out of Joint share several working practices with Joint Stock. 1. Mather Stock Car Company

The Mather Stock Car Company was a United States U.S. corporation that built railroad rolling stock . Mather specialized in stock car rail stock car s, but built other types of cars as well, including boxcar s. The company was headquartered in Chicago, Illinois . Their main headquarters building, Mather Tower , built in 1928 in Chicago, still stands today. This building has the smallest floors of any of Chicago s skyscraper s. History Mather was founded by Alonzo C. Mather the company s first stock car was built in 1880. As the 20th century dawned, Mather began leasing stock cars to the railroads that used them. Railroads of the time found it less expensive to lease stock cars than to purchase them outright or to build them. By the 1920s, Mather had expanded their fleet to include boxcar s and refrigerator car s along with a few tank car s. With the onset of the Great Depression in the US, Mather was one of a limited number of companies that saw profits in the 1930s. As railroads eliminated freight cars out of their own fleets, leasing companies such as Mather were able to step in and supply freight cars as needed. During World War II , Mather was one of the manufacturing companies producing the war emergency plan freight cars. These car types were based on designs from the 1920s and earlier they featured a lightweight truss body built of narrow steel angle stock to support the roof with wood panels bolted to the truss beams forming the walls of the cars. In the late 1950s Mather was merged into the North American Car Corporation of Chicago . Preservation Several examples of Mather s stock cars exist in museums, but only eight of the hundreds of box cars that Mather built survive to this day. Before the Act, incorporation was possible only by royal charter or local and Personal Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom private act and was limited owing to Parliament s jealous protection of the privileges and advantages thereby granted. As a result, many businesses came to be operated as unincorporated association s with possibly thousands of members. Any consequent litigation had to be carried out in the joint names of all the members and was almost impossibly cumbersome. Though Parliament would sometimes grant a private act to allow an individual to represent the whole in legal proceedings, this was a narrow and necessarily costly expedient, allowed only to established companies.
