Born in Newbury, Massachusetts , and the son of a clergyman, Parsons was one of the early students at the Dummer Academy now The Governor s Academy before matriculating to Harvard College from which he graduated in 1769, was a schoolmaster in Falmouth now Portland, Maine from 1770 1773 he studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1774. In 1800, he moved to Boston . He served as Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts from 1806 until his death in Boston in 1813. In politics, he was active as one of the Federalist leaders in the state. He was a member of the Essex County convention of 1778 called to protest against the proposed state constitution and as a member of the Essex Junto was probably the author of The Essex Result , which helped to secure the constitution s rejection at the polls. Parsons was a member of the state constitutional convention of 1779 1780 and one of the committee of twenty six who drafted the constitution. He was also a delegate to the state convention of 1788 which ratified the Federal Constitution. According to tradition, he was the author of the famous Conciliatory Resolutions , or proposed amendments to the constitution, which did much to win over Samuel Adams and John Hancock to ratification. His Commentaries on the Laws of the United States 1836 contains some of his more important legal opinions. Parsons died in Boston . In 1820 he was apprenticed to his brother in law, Charles Vachell, a surgeon apothecary in Cardiff. Vachell had married Redwood s eldest half sister Margaret in 1811. He was also secretary of the Cavendish Society 1846 72 and vice president of the Chemical Society. Theophilius Redwood was never President of the Pharmaceutical Society, but was President of the British Pharmaceutical Conferences in Glasgow and Plymouth, 1876 and 77. He was also President of the International Pharmaceutical conference held in London in 1881. After his retirement in 1885, he received the title of Emeritus Professor by unanimous vote of the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society. He moved back to the family home in Boverton, which he had inherited, but still continued to lecture. His last public appearance was appropriately at the Pharmaceutical Conference in Cardiff in 1891, as he himself remarked, a very different Cardiff from the one he had left in 1823. Harrington was born in 1762 and moved to Clarendon, Vermont , in 1788. Although never receiving any formal legal education he worked as a judge and representative of Clarendon in the state assembly. In October 1800 he was made the chief judge of the County Court of Rutland County, Vermont Rutland . In October 1803 he was chosen as one of three justices of the Vermont Supreme Court, where he served until 1813. Slave ownership case In June 1804, a runaway slave was brought before the Vermont Supreme Court in Middlebury, Vermont . When the slave s owner sought to claim his ownership of the slave Judge Harrington demanded to see proof that he did indeed own the slave. The owner produced bill of sale bills of sale for both the slave and the slave s mother. Judge Harrington said that the documents of title property title did not go far enough back in time. When the owner asked what proof of ownership the judge would accept, Judge Harrington replied, Nothing short of a bill of sale signed by God Almighty Himself. The other justices concurred, and the slave was set free.
