Orphan date February 2009 David Scotus was a medieval Irish chronicler. Biography His date of birth is unknown. Early in the twelfth century there was at W rzburg an ecclesiastic and teacher known as David. His surname Scotus shows that he very probably came from Ireland or, if he is identical with the homonymous Bishop of Bangor , from Wales see below . According to Ekkehard s Chronicon ref ed., Monum. German. Histor. Script., VI, 243 ref , Emperor Henry V received him, was charmed with his virtue and knowledge, and made him one of the imperial chaplain s. With other scholars David accompanied the king on his expedition to Italy in 1100, and was appointed royal historiographer for the occasion. He died in 1139 . Writings His work in three books is now known only from excerpts of it in later historians, especially in Ekkehard ref op. cit. above. ref and William of Malmesbury . The latter ref Gesta regum Anglorum Deeds of the kings of the Angli , in Patrologia Latina , CLXXIX, 1375. ref says that David described the expedition with partiality for the king. Possibly identical homonym A certain David was consecrated Bishop of Bangor in Wales, 4 April 1120 according to Malmesbury ref loc. cit. ref he was none other than the chaplain David Scotus. As bishop he took part in several English synods, and probably died in 1139, since his successor was then consecrated. But it is not easy to reconcile with the foregoing, the statement of the later historian Trithemius re Annales Hirsaugienses , I, 349. ref , that David became a monk under St. Macharius in the monastery of St. James in W rzburg , as this abbey was not founded until 1140. and vital expression in the writings of his great countryman, JohnScotus, a century later. This Clement ...Wikify date January 2011 Clement Scotus I fl. 745 was a bishop. Doubtless a native of Ireland, resident in the Frankish realm in the time of St. Boniface, archbishop of Mentz, against whose attempts to introduce the complete Roman discipline into Germany he strenuously, but in vain, contended. The archbishop cited him before a synod in 743 or 744, at which Carloman and Pippin were present, and Clement was deprived of his priesthood and condemned to imprisonment for sundry acts and opinions deemed heretical Monum. Mogunt. pp. 133, 137, 149 Willibald, Vit. S. Bonif. vii. p. 458 . Pope Zacharias, to whom the affair was reported, approved Boniface s action, and confirmed the former part of the sentence June 22, 744 Ep. xlviii. p. 133 . The charges against Clement were first that he had a wife Boniface calls her a concubine and two children more than this, that he justified marriage with a deceased brother s wife, in conformity with the Jewish law. In dogmatic theology he held views which seemed to contradict the Latin doctrine of predestination and he asserted that Christ on his rising from the dead delivered all who had been Kept in prison, faithful and unbelievers, worshippers of God as well as idolaters. This description, drawn by his enemy, probably indicates that Clement maintained a universalism of some sort. He was also accused of denying the canons of the church and rejecting the authority of SS. Jerome, Augustine, and Gregory see for the whole, Monum. Mogunt. pp. 133, 140, 141, 146 . He had in fact brought into collision with the unfriendly rigour of Latin Christianity those freer usages and more speculative habits of thought which prevailed in the churches of Ireland, at this time the fountain head of literary culture and missionary enterprise for the west of Europe .... Wikify date January 2011 Clement Scotus II Floruit fl. 820 , was a grammarian. Clement Scotus II arrived, according to the old tradition, from Ireland on the coast of Gaul, in company with another scholar of his nation, about the time when Charles the Great began to reign alone in the west, that is, after the death of Carloman in 771. The two men were warmly received at the Frankish court, and Clement was entrusted with the education of a number of pupils, apparently at the royal court. This appointment has been naturally connected with the foundation of the schola palatina, which formed a characteristic feature in Charles s domestic organisation. The older French scholars, as du Boulay Historia Universitatis Parisiensis, i. 568 , assuming that the school was established at Paris, claimed Clement accordingly as one of the founders of the university of some four centuries later date. The account, however, of Clement s appearance in the Frankish realm rests solely upon the authority of the monk of St. Gall Gesta Karoli Magni, i. 1, 3, in Jaff , Bibliotheca Rerum Germanicarum, iv. 632, 633 , who wrote towards the end of the ninth century, and whose narrative is admitted to contain a large element of fable. Yet some scholars who discredit the story still maintain that the unnamed Scot, or rather band of Scots, whose influence at the palace roused the opposition of Alcuin Ep. xcviii. in Jaffe s Bibliotheca, vi. 107 et seq. and of Bishop Theodulf of Orleans Carm. xxxv. in D mmler s Poet Latini avi Carolini, i. 487 et seq. 1881 , must necessarily designate Clement. This identification was merely suggested by Mabillon Acta SS. Ord. S. Bened. sec. iv. pt. i. praef. p. cxxxi, 1677 as a plausible inference from the monk of St. Gall s narrative, the historical character of which he ... , though this writer persists in calling both those surnamed Scotus by the double name of Clemens Claudius.
