    John Langton April 7, 1808 &ndash March 19, 1894 was a Canada Canadian businessman, political figure and civil servant. He was born in Ormskirk , Lancashire , England in 1808 and studied at Trinity College, Cambridge . ref Venn id LNGN824J name Langton, John ref He emigrated to Upper Canada in 1833 and settled near Peterborough, Ontario Peterborough . He worked for a time in the timber trade. In 1841, he was elected to the council for the Colborne District, Ontario Colborne District , becoming warden in 1848. In 1851, Langton was elected to the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada Legislative Council for Peterborough County, Ontario Peterborough he was reelected in 1854. In 1855, he was named the first chairman of the Board of Audit he resigned his seat in the assembly the following year. He also served on the senate for the University of Toronto Langton moved with the government to Quebec City in 1859 and was president of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec . After Canadian Confederation in 1867, Langton was appointed the head of the federal Board of Audit. In 1870, he was also named deputy minister of finance the Auditor General of Canada Auditor General s function was later to be separated from the finance department. He retired in 1878. From 1880 to 1882, he served as president of the Canadian Institute . He died in Toronto in 1894. In 1837, she settled on the frontier in Upper Canada , where she continued her artwork and also became known for her writing. She was born to Thomas and Ellen Langton in the Yorkshire Dales , but within a few months, they moved to Lancashire , where she was raised in a mansion named Blythe Hall , near Ormskirk . She and her older brother John and younger brother William were educated at home by their parents and private tutors. Her family travelled extensively through Austria, Belgium, France, Italy , Germany, and Switzerland, while the children received private art lessons from masters and exposure to literary figures wherever they stayed. Following the Napoleonic Wars , which ended in 1815, Thomas Langton s business in England became unstable and the family was forced to return to England from their travels and studies in 1821. On their return they were forced to sell their mansion, dismiss all but one servant, and move to a small townhouse in Liverpool .     Langton Herring is a village in west Dorset , England , situated beside The Fleet Lagoon see Chesil Beach , four miles north east of the town of Weymouth, Dorset Weymouth . Roughly six miles North West from the Dorset seaside resort of Weymouth, and within sight of the hilltop stone obelisk memorial erected by public subscription in 1844 in memory of Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar, is the small village of Langton Herring. The name of the village comes from the Old English Lang tun meaning long farmstead or estate with the 13th Century Harang family affix, from their time as Lords of the Manor. The village has a population of 147 As of 2001 , although this is bolstered by a number of holiday cottages. There is a noted pub, the Elm Tree.     Samuel Thomas Langton 24 January 1886 &mdash 10 July 1918 was an England English cricket er who played first class cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club Derbyshire in 1909 and 1910. Langton was born at Parkgate, Rotherham , Yorkshire . He made his debut for Derbyshire in June 1909 in a match against Leicestershire County Cricket Club Leicestershire and made one more appearance during the season, making little contribution to Derbyshire s run count during the season. He played one game in the 1910 season against Sussex County Cricket Club Sussex when he made his top scoring innings of 6 runs. He was a right handed batsman and played 5 innings in 3 matches with a top score of 6 and an average of 2.80. He bowled 13 overs giving 42 runs for no wickets.
