John Van Kessel born December 19, 1969 in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia is a former Canada Canadian professional ice hockey player. Van Kessel played ten professional seasons, in the American Hockey League AHL , East Coast Hockey League ECHL and International Hockey League 1945 2001 International Hockey League IHL in North America, and in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga DEL and Austrian Hockey League AL in Europe. Playing career Van Kessel played junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League for the Belleville Bulls and the North Bay Centennials . After the 1987 88 season, he was drafted in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft in the third round, 49th overall by the Los Angeles Kings . He would play two further seasons of junior before debuting in professional play with the New Haven Nighthawks after his junior season ended in 1989 90. He then joined the Phoenix Roadrunners IHL Phoenix Roadrunners of the IHL where he played two seasons. In the 1992 NHL Expansion Draft, Van Kessel was selected by the Ottawa Senators of the NHL in the second and last draft by an NHL team of his rights. unsourced date December 2008 Alexander Lipmann Kessel , Order of the British Empire MBE , Military Cross MC , Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons FRCS 19 December 1914 5 June 1986 , was a famous orthopaedic surgeon , often known by his nickname of Lippy. Born in Pretoria , South Africa , he was involved at the Battle of Arnhem where at the time he was a Captain British Army and Royal Marines Captain in the RAMC , and is credited with saving the life of Brigadier John Winthrop Hackett Junior Hackett when he operated on him for a severe abdominal wound at the St. Elisabeth Hospital in Arnhem. Image St Elizabeth Hospital.JPG thumb 200px right St. Elizabeth Hospital Kessel had the curious experience of looking out of a window in the St Elizabeth Hospital and seeing the Division s CO Roy Urquhart Major General Urquhart , who was in charge of the whole battle at Arnhem, running along the street. It wasn t until after the battle he found out that the General was just about to enter a house where he would stay surrounded by Germans for over 30 hours. When he first entered the St. Elizabeth hospital he spoke to the Dutch staff in Afrikaans which he had learned as a child in South Africa , because he had always been told it was similar to Dutch. The staff took offence at this as to them it sounded like German, and he was told in no uncertain terms to always speak English. Kessel was taken prisoner at Arnhem, but later escaped and has told his story in his book Surgeon at Arms , published in 1958.
