  1. John Abbot (poet)

John Abbot 1587 1588 c. 1650 was an England English Roman Catholic Church Roman Catholic clergyman and poet. His provenance is uncertain, he might have been from either London or Leicester , but he is believed to be the nephew both of George Abbot bishop George Abbot , the Archbishop of Canterbury and Robert Abbot bishop Robert Abbot , the bishop of Salisbury . Abbot was thus from a strongly Protestant family, but after being educated at Balliol College, Oxford Balliol College , University of Oxford Oxford , he travelled to the continent where he was converted to Roman Catholicism. On returning to England he was in Society of Jesus Jesuit orders for a while, before working as a secular priest. In 1635 he was imprisoned in the Gatehouse at Palace of Westminster Westminster . He was released within a year, but in 1637 he was again arrested, and seems to have spent the rest of his life in prison. He was, along with other Catholic priests, condemned to death in 1641, but the conviction was never executed, and he appears to have died in prison in 1650. His best known work is his poem Devout Rhapsodies 2 vols., 1647 , about the Fallen angel war in heaven and the temptation and The Fall of Man fall of man . The monastery was founded in 1192 by monks from Dundrennan Abbey with the patronage of Lochlann, Lord of Galloway Lochlann Roland , Lord of Galloway . In the 16th century the monastery increasingly came under the control of secular warlords. In 1560 the monastery was occupied by James Gordon of Lochinvar brother of the recently deceased commendator , and the monks were expelled. However, soon after, Thomas Hay, a follower of the earl of Cassillis Lochinvar s enemy , was installed in the monastery as commendator and the monks were allowed to return.
