Born in Weimar , he attended the Thomasschule in Leipzig , his father providing for his musical formation. In contrast to his elder brothers Wilhelm Friedemann Bach Wilhelm Friedemann and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Carl Philipp Emanuel he did not get the opportunity to study at the university after finishing school. Instead, he competed for a post as musician. JohannGottfried Bernhard first served as organist at the Marienkirche in M hlhausen in 1735 and, after leaving the town charged with debts, managed with the support of his father to find a new engagement as organist at the Jakobikirche in Sangerhausen . In 1738, he secretly abandoned a career in music in order to study Law in Jena . There he died prematurely at the age of twenty four. Education and Ministry Johann Scheibel was born in Wroc aw Breslau , Silesia , and studied at the Martin Luther University of Halle Wittenberg University of Halle from 1801 to 1804. He went on from there to be the assistant minister at St. Elisabeth s Church, Wroc aw St Elisabeth s church in Breslau from 1804 to 1818. He was theological until 1830 when he was suspended from his post. Scheibel came to prominence as a leader of the Old Lutherans in the dissent against the Prussian Union Evangelical Christian Church Prussian Union . He spoke, preached and wrote against the Union, which consequently resulted in the suspension from his post as theological professor. Undaunted, Scheibel continued in his dissent as he moved to new cities. He was at Dresden in 1832 where he was ordered to leave that same year. Then Hermsdorf until 1836 where likewise he was asked to leave, then Glauchau and Nuremberg. He died at Nuremberg about the time that he was being restored to his post as professor at Breslau. From 1820 until his death Stallbaum was connected with Thomasschule zu Leipzig , from 1835 as rector. In 1840 he was also appointed extraordinary professor in university of Leipzig the university . His reputation rests upon his work on Plato , of which he published two complete editions the one 1821 1825 a revised text with critical apparatus, the other 1827 1860 containing exhaustive prolegomena and commentary written in excellent Latin , a fundamental contribution to Platonic exegesis . A separate edition of the Parmenides 1839 , with the commentary of Proclus , deserves mention. He became a medical man, visited Switzerland for the first time in 1790, and became so enamoured of it that he spent three years exploring the country and collecting all kinds of information relating to it. The result was the publication Z rich , 1793 of his Anleitung, auf die n tzlichste und genussvollste Art in der Schweitz zu reisen 2 vols , in which he gave a complete account of the country, the General Information sections being followed by an alphabetically arranged list of places, with descriptions. It at once superseded all other works of the kind, and was the best Swiss guide book till the appearance of John Murray publisher Murray 1838 . It was particularly strong on the geological and historical sides. The second 1804 1805 and third 1809 1810 editions filled four volumes, but the following the 8th appeared in 1843 were in a single volume. The work was translated into French in 1795 many later editions and into English by 1818 . In 1768 he succeeded his teacher Johann Nikolaus Tischer 1707 74 as organist in Schmalkalden. He later continued his musical studies with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Johann Philipp Kirnberger . Vierling died in Schmalkalden. He was educated, first at Borna, then at the Nikolai school and University of Leipzig . The study of Anthony Ashley Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury Shaftesbury and Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke Bolingbroke wakened his interest in theology , and, breaking off his studies, he set out for Paris. On the way he was seized by Hessian recruiting officers and sold to England, whereupon he was drafted to Canada . After his return in 1783 he deserted at Bremen city Bremen , but was captured and brought to Emden a second attempt at flight also failed. In 1787, however, a citizen of Emden became surety for him to the amount of 80 taler s, and he was allowed to visit his home. He did not return, but paid off his debt in Emden with the remuneration he received for translating an English novel. Initially he studied law in Leipzig , afterwards transferring to the University of Jena , where his focus turned to medicine. At Jena he had as instructors Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland 1762 1836 and philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte 1762 1814 . In 1797 he obtained his medical doctorate with a dissertation on the diagnosis and treatment of melancholia . He worked for a period of time as a physician in a madhouse in Torgau , and from 1805 to 1810 was director of a psychiatric institute at Bayreuth . Later in his career he was appointed director of Prussian Health Services, where he wielded influence on the overall development of Prussian mental hospitals. During his tenure at Bayreuth he made efforts at transforming a former penitentary madhouse into a place of treatment for the mentally ill with limited success. As a psychiatrist he equated mental illness with uncontrolled passions, and defined treatment as establishing control of reason over passions by educational means. He studied at the University of Halle Wittenberg University of Halle in Prussian Saxony like numerous prominent pastors in the Baltic region, and received a doctorate in theology from the University of Dorpat in 1850. He was granted an honorary doctorate from the University of K nigsberg in 1883. The editor of the major Latvian language newspaper Latvie u Av zes and a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences , Bielenstein was the author of numerous major works on linguistics and ethnography, including Die lettische Sprache, nach ihren Lauten und Formen The Latvian Language, Its Phonetics and Forms , 2 volumes, 1863 64 and Die Grenzen des lettischen Volksstammes und der lettischen Sprache in der Gegenwart und im 13.
