JohannFriedrich Agricola 4 January 1720 &ndash 2 December 1774 was a Germany German composer , organist , singer , pedagogue , and writer on music. He sometimes wrote under the pseudonym Flavio Anicio Olibrio . Biography Agricola was born in Dobitschen , Thuringia . While a student of law at Leipzig he studied music under Johann Sebastian Bach . In 1741 he went to Berlin , where he studied musical composition under Johann Joachim Quantz . He was soon generally recognized as one of the most skillful organists of his time. The success of his comic opera, Il filosofo convinto in amore , performed at Potsdam in 1750, led to an appointment as court composer to Frederick the Great . In 1759, on the death of Carl Heinrich Graun , he was appointed conductor of the royal orchestra. He married the noted operatic soprano Benedetta Emilia Molteni, a marriage of which the king apparently disapproved. Agricola died in Berlin at 54. He received his musical training in Leipzig from Werner Fabricius and in Dresden from Vincenzo Albrici . Then he worked as an organist in Merseburg cathedral until his departure in 1698 caused by the paralysis of his right hand because of a stroke . His pupil Georg Friedrich Kauffmann succeeded him as a princely Saxon townsman and cathedral organist at the court of the Saxon duke and Merseburg Cathedral. His name survives today because of his preference of writing left hand parts to be played in consecutive notes, rather than as block chords, which is still known to musicians as an Alberti Bass . Alberti s works include chorale preludes, 35 choral arrangements, 12 ricercati lost and various sacred works. JohannFriedrich Adam , later called Michael Friedrich Adams 1780, Moscow 1 March 1838, Vereya was a botanist from Saint Petersburg St. Petersburg , Russia . He studied from 1795 1796 in the medical school of Saint Petersburg St. Petersburg . In the years 1800 1802 he traveled across Transcaucasia in the entourage of Count Apollo Mussin Pushkin 1760 1805 . In 1805, he was part of a scientific team attached to the unsuccessful diplomatic mission of Count Yury Golovkin to China . After the failure of the mission, he and many of the other scientists stayed on in Siberia to pursue their researches. In 1806, while in Yakutsk , he heard about an intact woolly mammoth carcass near the mouth of the Lena River . He hastily arranged an expedition to the location where he was able to recover most of the skeleton, skin, and almost forty pounds of hair. At the time, and for almost a century after, this was the most complete mammoth known. He returned to St. Petersburg with his prize. The skeleton is now on display at The Museum of Zoology in Saint Petersburg, where it is known as the Adams mammoth .
