Image Martyrdom of Thomas Haukes.png right thumb 120px Thomas Hawkes on Market Hill, he is saying O Lord receive my Spirit Thomas Hawkes was an England English protestant martyr who burned to death in 1555 during the Marian Persecutions rather than allow his son to be baptised into the Roman Catholic Church . Responding to Edmund Bonner , the Bishop of London, who urged him to return to Catholicism, he is reported to have said No my lord, that I will not, for if I had a hundred bodies I would suffer them all to be torn in pieces rather than I will abjure and recant. As he burned, Hawkes threw up his hands and clapped them three times, a sign to his friends that the pain could be endured. ref name fox cite book url http books.google.co.uk books?id aCRMAAAAYAAJ&lpg PA284&ots NpU9k9Vqkf&dq thomas 20hawkes 20martyr&pg PA284 v onepage&q&f false title An abridgement of the Book of Martyrs year 1810 pages 284 290 accessdate 16 July 2010 chapter The life and martyrdom of Thomas Hawkes ref Hawkes death and the circumstances leading up to it are recorded in detail in John Foxe s Book of Martyrs . Herbert Edwin Hawkes 1872 1943 was an United States American mathematician and educator. His 25 year tenure as Dean of Columbia College of Columbia University Columbia College , the longest of any Columbia College dean, earned him the title the dean of American college deans . Hawkes studied mathematics at the Georg August University of G ttingen in Germany as well as at Yale , where he received his doctorate in 1900. After authoring several texts in algebra, Hawkes accepted a position as professor of mathematics at Columbia University in 1910. When Columbia College dean Frederick P. Keppel departed to work for the United States Department of War U.S. War Department in 1917, Hawkes became acting dean, ascending to the full deanship a year later. As dean, Hawkes was known as a supporter of general education. He promoted a full undergraduate education and opposed the Columbia plan to fast track students to graduate school in under four years. In 1919, he and a small group of other faculty members helped assemble a sequence of war issues classes known as Contemporary Civilization this would become a more general year long philosophy course and the cornerstone of the college s famous Core Curriculum Columbia College Core Curriculum . In the 1930s he pushed through a similar year long humanities sequence, to become the Core Curriculum s Literature Humanities course, over some faculty objections.
