  1. Jig (jewellery)

Cleanup date April 2007 A jig used in making jewelry , a specific type of Jig tool jig , is a plate or open frame for holding work and helping to shape jewelry components made out of wire or small sheets of metal. A jig in the jewelry making application is used to help establish a pattern for use in shaping the wire or sheets of metal. In the jewelry application, the shaping of the metal is done by hand or with simple hand tools like a hammer. History The use of wire in making jewelry is something that can be seen in jewelry from the Sumerian Dynasty of Ur about 2560 BC.  The British Museum has examples of jewelry obtained from the Royal Cemetery of Ur Iraq that include wire spirals.    Examples of wire and sheet metal jewelry can also be found in jewelry from Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome . While we have no examples of jigs or patterns being used to make that jewelry, one can surmise that sometime after the Sumerians, but likely before the Romans that patterns made out of carved wood were use to shape jewelry components. re the same technique we use in our knitting today. Fact date November 2007 The Boheman culture brought back wire jewelry. In the 1800 they used wire to string chips of polished glass and stone beads to make necklaces and braclet Modern Products There are many techniques for making jewelry using a jewelry making jig. Most of these techniques can be termed by the name wire wrapping. This name for making jewelry by hand refers to the fact that instead of using solder or glue, wire components using this approach are connected to one another using the same techniques developed prior to the Middle Ages of wrapping wire around itself to permanently fix a loop in wire and to connect wire components. Techniques for wire wrapping that are commonly used today can be seen in Roman jewelry and in Egyptian jewelry dated to 6 and 7 AD. While the wire used ... 1. Staircase jig

orphan date December 2009 Image Staircase jig JAC rev.jpg thumb right 250px A staircase jig A staircase jig is a woodworking tool that incorporates both a right angle and an acute angle in its design. The Jig tool jig is easily transported due to its small size and light weight. Precise measurements are required to layout the diagonal locations. This jig uses a zero reference line from which the rise and tread are measured. The upper part of the jig is a right triangle with a roundover overhang. The template allows for a tight fit of the tread into the stringer in the overhang section. The bottom of the jig incorporates an acute angle. This tapered angle allows a space for a wedge mechanical device to fit against the back side of the vertical direction vertical and the horizontal plane of the stringer. This jig can be used to lay out different rise vertical and tread horizontal widths. The jig is used with a plunge router and a wikt bushing bushing guide. The router plows out a precise groove into the finished product that allows all the parts to fit together. Uses of jig The jig is used to make finish stringer s, in interior staircase fabrication. The stringer is also referred to as a skirtboard. It can be used in a closed staircase or an open staircase where one side of the staircase is exposed and the other is housed into the skirtboard. Design of jigs The jig in the image is designed to cut only one segment of the stringer ref Schuttner,Scott, Basic Stairbuilding,The Taunton Press, 1990, ISBN 0 942391 44 6 ref at a time. Some industrial staircase jigs ref Fine woodworking, Tilt Top Table, Mario Rodriquez, pg. 74, No. 173, 2004 ref are designed to cut out an entire stringer in one setup. 1. Slip jig

More footnotes date November 2010 Slip jig refers to both a style within Irish music , and the Irish dance to music in slip jig time. The slip jig is in 9 8 time signature time , traditionally with accents on 5 of the 9 beats two pairs of crotchet quaver quarter note eighth note followed by a Dotted note dotted crotchet note . The slip jig is one the four most common Irish stepdance s, the others being the reel dance reel , the jig and the hornpipe . It is danced in soft shoes, at one time by men only, then for several decades only by women, and today slip jigs can be danced by any dancer, though at a competitive level, they are almost exclusively danced by women. This dance is graceful and controlled, with heels very high, often called the ballet of Irish dance . There are also traditional Irish C ilidh c il dances which are slip jigs, though these are much less common than reels and double jigs. Because of its timing, the slip jig is longer than the reel for the same number of bars of music. In Irish stepdance competition, the tempo of 113 beats per minute is the same as other dances, but as each bar is longer, instead of dancing to 48 bars of music the dancer is only required to dance 40 bars of music each of 2 1 2 steps . Stepdance judges prefer sliding motions with the feet and graceful movements that seem to slip across the floor. Slip jig timing can also be used for strip the willow dances in c ilidh folk dance , although the fact that most social dancers do not dance the step limits its use in set dance and ceili dance socially. 1. Jig borer

The jig borer is a type of machine tool invented at the end of World War I to make possible the quick yet very precise location of hole centers. It was invented independently in the United States and Switzerland. ref Moltrecht, Karl Hans Machine Shop Practice , 2nd ed. New York Industrial Press, 1981, Volume 1, p. 403. ref It can be viewed as a specialized species of boring mill or milling machine that provided tool and die maker s with a higher degree of positioning precision repeatability and accuracy than those general machines had previously provided. A typical jig borer had a work table of around 400mm x 200mm, which can be moved using large handwheels with micrometer style readouts and verniers on particularly carefully made shafts with a strong degree of gearing this allowed positions to be set on the two axes to an accuracy of 0.0001 2.5 microns . 1. Jig concentrators

Unreferenced date October 2010 New unreviewed article source ArticleWizard date October 2010 Jig concentrators are devices used mainly in the mining industry for mineral processing , to separate particles within the ore body, based on their specific gravity relative density . The particles would usually be of a similar size, often crushed and screened prior to being fed over the jig bed . There are many variations in design, however the basic principles are constant The particles are introduced to the jig bed usually a screen where they are thrust upward by a pulsing water column or body, resulting in the particles being suspended within the water. As the pulse dissipates, the water level returns to its lower starting position and the particles once again settle on the jig bed. As the particles are exposed to gravitational energy whilst in suspension within the water, those with a higher specific gravity density settle faster than those with a lower count, resulting in a concentration of material with higher density at the bottom, on the jig bed. The particles are now concentrated according to density and can be extracted from the jig bed separately. In the mining of most heavy minerals, the denser material would be the desired mineral and the rest would be discarded as floats or tailings . There are some minerals, notably coal , that are lighter lower in density than the surrounding rock and in such instances the process of extraction would work in reverse, i.e. the coal would settle on top with the rock below on the jig bed . There are several designs and methods of extraction from the jig bed. 1. Jig grinder

Unreferenced date September 2009 A jig grinder is a machine tool used for grinding complex shapes and holes where the highest degrees of accuracy and finish are required. The jig grinder is very similar to a jig borer , in that the table positioning and spindles are very accurate far more so than a manual milling machine or lathe . It is almost exclusively used by tool and die makers in the creation of jigs or mating holes and pegs on dies. There are usually many peripheral elements to a large jig grinder, including separate hydraulic motors, air compressors, and various cooling systems for both the hydraulic circuit and supplying coolant to the work and machine itself. The machine operates by a high speed air spindle rotating a grinding bit. The air spindles are removable and interchangeable to achieve varying surface speeds. Some spindles are fixed speed 60000 rpm , others are adjustable 30000 50000 rpm , and still others are very high speed 175000 rpm . The machines have a standard X Y table with the notable exception of knee travel. All axes are indexed to .0001 via a vernier scale on the handwheels, with higher accuracy available with the use of measuring bars. The machine head has two vertical travels, one rough head adjustment and the other a precise spindle adjustment. The spindle to which the detachable air spindle mounts also rotates at a variable speed and can typically outfeed .100 while running, again with an accuracy of .0001 on the handwheel or greater, for very precise hole, peg and surface grinding. A well kept jig grinder will reliably position work to a higher degree of accuracy than is possible with handwheels alone. These features are all critical in positioning a hole and peg system a precise distance from a reference surface or edge. The most important factor on a jig grinder is the dual spindle configuration. The main spindle is roughly positioned ... Jig Grinder Category Grinders ...   more details

  1. Cajun Jig

Cajun Jig , or pop music is the most traditional music for it Cajun One Step , is among the simplest of Cajun dance forms. It has only one basic step . The Cajun Jig was popular in Louisiana in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but remains a mainstay of dancers. Often, this step pattern is alternated with other styles, during a single song, particularly among those who are regular dancers, in urban and non traditional settings, or those who are also Zydeco dancers. The Cajun Jig is danced to fast or slow Cajun music played under 2 4 or 4 4 timing, associated with the two step , rather than one step blues time or 3 4 timing associated with a waltz . The Cajun Jig shares vague similarity to Merengue dance Merengue . Despite the single like step, variations of the Ballroom glossary Handhold handhold combined with turns give the dance infinite dance move options. The dancers handholds can be uncrossed i.e., the right hand of one partner meets the left hand of the other one and vice versa or crossed i.e., joined right hands over left, or left over right . Basic step To begin Start marching one two, one two, left right, left right in place, sideways, forward, backward. Now pretend that to have a nail in one boot that hurts your heel, so that this foot steps on a toe, and you march in a limping way. This limping also gives you this slight bob bob bobbing up and down. It doesn t matter which foot limps you can freely switch during the dance. When stepping on your toe, you push a little bit up on count One and on Two simply drop onto the second, flat foot. Note that this description creates an exaggerated hobble often seen with newer dancers. The effect of the step is not to avoid stepping down, and not to appear as if one is stepping up, but to provide more weight on a planted foot , allowing the other to move freely. For the man, the weighted foot is the right foot leg for the woman ... style. Louisianarootsmusic dance stub Category Cajun dance de Cajun Jig ...   more details
