Vishwanath Rao Ringe Late Pt. Vishwanath Rao Ringe Tanarang born on 6 December 1922 was a Hindustani Classical Music vocalist and composer. He belonged to Gwalior Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music . He composed more than 2000 bandishs in about 200 ragaas, for which he has been enlisted in Limca Book of Records . He wrote couple of books in past named Sangitanjali and Swaranjali and a recent book Aacharya Tanarang ki Bandishen was published. Pt. Ringe was the disciple of late Pandit Krishnarao Pandit of Gwalior gharana . He started learning music from his childhood. He received rigorous and intensive training and full guidance as a performer Khyal Gayakee, in Gwalior Gharana style. In 1939, he established a music school named Bhartiya Sangeet Kala Mandir. More than 2000 compositions in about 200 raagas, have been composed in various Tala music Tala s. Viz... Ektal, Deepchandi, Tritala, Tilwada, Chanchar, Dadra, Keharva, Jhaptala, Ada Choutal, Roopak etc. Pt Ringe had himself composed a Raga Hemashri, which he has Rendered in All India Radio AIR Programme. His compositions include Bada Khyal , Chota Khyal , Chaturang, Tarana , Sadra, Sargam, Tillana, Sur Sagar . Sur Sagar is a unique composition, in which the lyrics are same as the notes. Pt. Ringe died at the age of 83 at his residence in Indore , Madhya Pradesh in 2005. Khamaj Thaat The parent scale Khamaj Thaat, notated in sargam notation, has the following structure S R G m P D n S .n is komal here. In Western terms, assuming the tonic Sa to be at C, the scale would be C D E F G A B flat C. Khamaj thaat is thus equivalent to the mixolydian musical mode mode in Western classical music . The Carnatic music equivalent of the Khamaj Thaat is Harikambhoji , the 28 sup th sup Melakarta raga . Raga Khamaj Raga Khamaj, the specific improvisational scale based on this mode, has the following structure Aroha ascending structure N S G m P N S . If Sa C, then this would translate to B C E F G A B C Avroha S n D P m P D G m R S. If Sa C, then this would translate as C B flat A G F G A E F D C. The Vadi Hindustani classical music vadi or sonant note is Ga, the dominant. The samavadi or con sonant note is Ni, the mediant. There is no universally accepted pakad for Raga Khamaj, although the phrase m P D G m R S is considered important. ND MPD MG too is quite predominant pakad . The prahar prescribed performance time of Raga Khamaj is 9 pm to midnight. This raga has been explored more in the lighter forms of Hindustani Classical Music such as Thumri, Tappa etc. Yet a few compositions in Dhrupad and Khayal are found as well.
