Astride the southwest rim of D Alembert is Slipher lunar crater Slipher . To the north is the crater Yamamoto crater Yamamoto , and to the south southwest lies Langevin crater Langevin . This walled plain has the same diameter as Clavius crater Clavius on the near side, making it one of the largest such formations on the Moon. As with many lunar walled plains of comparable dimensions, the outer rim of this formation has been worn and battered by subsequent impacts. Besides Slipher, the most notable of these craters is D Alembert Z intruding into the northern rim. There is also a small crater on the northwest inner wall that has a wide cleft in its eastern side, and a smaller crater along the southeastern inner wall. As eroded as the rim may be, its form can still be readily discerned as a roughly circular ridge line in the lunar terrain. The interior floor of D Alembert is a relatively level surface, at least in comparison with the rough terrain that surrounds the crater rim. Le Pautre was an apprentice to a carpenter and builder. In addition to learning mechanical and constructive work, he developed considerable skill with the pencil. His designs, innumerable in quantity and exuberant in content, consisted mainly of ceilings, friezes, chimney pieces, doorways and mural decorations. He also devised fire dogs, sideboards, cabinets, console tables, mirrors and other pieces of furniture. Le Pautre was long employed at the Gobelins manufactory . His work is often very flamboyant and elaborate. He frequently used Putto amorini and swags, arabesque s and cartouche s in his work. His chimney chimney pieces , in contrast, were often simple and elegant. His engraved plates, nearly 1,500 in number, are almost entirely original and include a portrait of himself. He made many designs for Andre Charles Boulle . He became a member of the academy of Paris in 1677. Le Prince first studied painting techniques in his native Metz . He then travelled to Paris around 1750 and became a leading student of the great painter, Fran ois Boucher 1703 1770 . Le Prince s early paintings in both theme and style are comparable to his master s rococo techniques. In 1758 Le Prince journeyed to Russia to work for Catherine the Great at the Winter Palace Imperial Palace , St. Petersburg . He remained in Russia for five years and also travelled extensively throughout Finland, Lithuania and even Siberia . When Le Prince returned to Paris in December, 1763, he brought with him an extensive collection of drawings which he employed as the basis for a number of fine paintings and etchings. J. B. Le Prince was elected a full member of the Acad mie de peinture et de sculpture in 1765. He is also known as Toison d or because he served as King of Arms to the Order of the Golden Fleece . Of noble birth, he adopted the profession of arms and with other Burgundians fought in the England English ranks at Battle of Agincourt Agincourt . In 1430, on the foundation of the Order of the Golden Fleece by Philip the Good , duke of Burgundy , Le Fevre was appointed its king of arms and he soon became a very influential person at the Burgundian court. He frequently assisted Philip in conducting negotiations with foreign powers, and he was an arbiter in tournament medieval tournaments and on all questions of chivalry , where his wide knowledge of heraldry was highly useful. He died at Bruges of natural causes. Le Fevre wrote a Chronique, or Histoire de Charles VI., roy de France . The greater part of this chronicle is merely a copy of the work of Enguerrand de Monstrelet , but Le Fevre is an original authority for the years between 1428 and 1436 and makes some valuable additions to our knowledge, especially about the chivalry of the Burgundian court. He is more concise than Monstrelet, but is equally partial to the dukes of Burgundy. The Chronique has been edited by F. Morand for the Soci t de l histoire de France Paris, 1876 .
