Part of his early life was spent abroad, where he made the acquaintance of George I of Great Britain George Louis , Elector of Hanover , afterwards King George I. In 1713 he became member of parliament for Tregony UK Parliament constituency Tregony , in 1717 Secretary at War , and in the following year Secretary of State for the Southern Department . Craggs was implicated in the South Sea Bubble , but not so deeply as his father, whom he predeceased, dying on 16 February 1721. Among Craggs s friends were Alexander Pope who wrote the epitaph on his monument in Westminster Abbey , Joseph Addison , and John Gay . JamesCraggs left an illegitimate daughter Harriot Craggs by the noted dancer and actress Hester Santlow . Harriot married firstly in 1726 Richard Eliot diplomat Richard Eliot , having 9 children including Edward Craggs Eliot, 1st Baron Eliot and secondly in 1749 to John Hamilton captain John Hamilton by whom she had a son. A son of Anthony Craggs of Holbeck, Durham , he was baptized on 10 June 1657. After following various callings in London, Craggs, who was a person of considerable financial ability, entered the service of the Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough Duchess of Marlborough , and through her influence became in 1702 member of parliament for Grampound, retaining his seat until 1713. He was in business as an army clothier and held several official positions, becoming joint United Kingdom Postmaster General Postmaster General in 1715 and, making the most of his opportunities in all these capacities, he amassed a great deal of money. Craggs also increased his wealth by mixing in the affairs of the South Sea Bubble South Sea Company , but after his death an act of parliament confiscated all the property which he had acquired since December 1719. He left an enormous fortune when he died in disgrace for his involvement in the South Sea Bubble, a month after the death of his son. It is possible that Craggs the elder committed suicide. His wife was Elizabeth Richards, daughter of Jacob Richards. Kenneth Ken Craggs was an assistant football soccer football coach sports manager , and, briefly, a manager. He has held various coaching and scouting roles within the game. He never played the sport at a professional level. Craggs served as assistant manager to Alan Mullery at Brighton and Hove Albion F.C. Brighton and Hove Albion , as the Seagulls climbed from Football League Third Division Division Three to Football League First Division Division One . He followed Mullery to Charlton Athletic F.C. Charlton Athletic in 1981, and took over the manager s job after Mullery left a year later. Despite their previously close relationship, the two men would never work together in football again. Craggs was in charge when Charlton signed Danish international and former European Footballer of the Year , Allan Simonsen , although he also oversaw the sale of Paul Walsh , Viggo Jacobsen and Steve Harrison footballer Steve Harrison . He won his first game in charge 2 1 at Leicester City F.C. Leicester City , but managed just four more wins in the opening 15 games of the season. After a 5 1 home defeat to Rotherham United F.C.
