Portal Anglicanism Thomas Mozley 1806 June 17, 1893 , was an England English clergyman and writer associated with the Oxford Movement . Mozley was born at Gainsborough, England Gainsborough , Lincolnshire , the son of a bookseller and publisher. His brother, JamesBowlingMozley , would become known for his own theological works. From Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Gainsborough and Charterhouse School he progressed to Oriel College, Oxford in 1825, where he became the pupil, and subsequently the intimate friend, of John Henry Newman . In 1831 he was ordained, after which he became curate of Colchester , leaving a year later to take over the rector ship of Moreton Pinkney . He asked to leave four years later and in 1836 became rector of Cholderton , Wiltshire . In September of that year, he married Newman s younger sister Harriet, creating a family connection to his mentor. From the beginning, Mozley was a strong supporter of the Tractarian movement . After contributing for some time to the British Critic , its periodical, Mozley succeeded Newman as editor in July 1841. In 1843 he was on the point of joining the Roman Catholic Church . Newman, however, strongly advised him to take two years to reflect, and Mozley decided to remain an Anglican . In 1844 he began to write leading articles for The Times , and continued to do so regularly for many years. Ironically, Newman s own conversion to Catholicism in 1845 broke the connection between Mozley and Newman, who stopped their correspondence. In 1847 Mozley resigned his country living and settled in London . In 1868 he accepted the living of Plymtree in Devon . Lofting in bowling is when a bowler throws a bowling ball more than a short distance down the lane. This is usually done with the bounce pass technique, but can also be done with a straight ball. Lofting is looked down upon by the bowling community and bowling alley employees because of the damage to the ball and lanes. Many bowling alleys that use wood for their lanes will either have signs that tell the bowlers not to loft, or an employee will tell the bowlers not to do so. Lofting the ball before the arrows in some bowling alleys is not against the rules. In the sport of candlepin bowling , lofting a ball beyond a line situated ten feet 3.05 m down the lane from the main foul line is called a lob , and is considered a ball foul, resulting in no counted pinfall from a ball delivered in such a manner, as the ball must first touch the lanebed on the bowler s side of the lob line to be considered a legal delivery. Image BowlingR.jpg thumb right 200px Tenpins In the US, pin specifications for standard tenpins are set by the United States Bowling Congress . Pins are 4.75 inches wide at their widest point and convert 15 in mm tall. They weigh 3 Pound mass lb , 6 Ounce oz , although in 1998 pins weighing convert 3 lb 10 oz kg abbr on were approved. Duckpins are shorter and squatter than standard tenpins. Canadian fivepins are between duckpins and tenpins in size, but have a thick, inch wide rubber band around the widest part of the pin to increase pin action when struck. Candlepins are not similar to the others they are tallest of all at 15 3 4 inches, but only 2 15 16 inches wide and convert 2 lb 8 oz kg abbr on in weight. They are nearly cylindrical in shape and resemble candles, hence their name. Unlike other bowling pins, candlepins may be set on either end. Bowling pins are constructed by gluing blocks of rock maple wood into the approximate shape, and then turning on a Lathe tool lathe . After the lathe shapes the pin, it is coated with a plastic material, painted, and covered with a glossy finish. Because of the scarcity of suitable wood, efforts to make all plastic bowling pins have been underway for several years. Juggling club s could be mistaken for bowling pins due to their similar shape. Mergeto Bowling discuss Talk Sport bowling Merger proposal date February 2009 Sport Bowling , an alternative to traditional bowling leagues, offers players the opportunity to bowl on exactly the same lane conditions and oil patterns that professional bowlers face on the PBA Tour . Sport Bowling was created by the United States Bowling Congress , the governing body of the sport of bowling. Sport Bowling leagues, known as http www.pbaexperience.org PBA Experience Leagues , are offered in conjunction with the Professional Bowlers Association . The difference in sport bowling versus traditional bowling leagues is in the way the oil pattern is laid down on the bowling lane. In a traditional pattern, the oil is applied mostly evenly across the lane, resulting in a uniform lane condition. Sport bowling incorporates five unique oil patterns, each with its own conditions and playing styles. The Chameleon oil pattern Chameleon is a 40 foot, strip style pattern that challenges players to adjust their game and attack from different angles in order to score well. The Cheetah, at 36 feet, is the shortest of the PBA patterns. Cheetah plays extremely close to the channel and requires a smooth reaction off the break point. The 42 foot Scorpion, with a larger volume of oil down the lane, tends to play in the track and calls for straight angles with an aggressive ball. The longest and possibly most difficult pattern is the Shark. At 44 feet, the key to success is slower ball speed, keeping the break point as close to the head pin as possible. Like its namesake, the 38 foot Viper comes at bowlers quickly from all angles. Bowlers will want to start as far outside as possible and make adjustments ... A bowling league is a group event where several teams bowl against each other. Most bowling leagues consist of four team players that meet up once a week and usually at the same time and day. Teams of three or five players are also common. Leagues can be set up as male only, female only, or mixed. Leagues were established soon after the most modern type of bowling was created. Ten pin bowling is a modern form of bowling that was formed in 1895 in New York City. Each week the teams take turns facing one other team. In most bowling leagues each team plays three games per visit. In the first week of the league, the average and handicap of each player is set. Handicap is the difference of the sum of averages between the two teams that are facing each other. Besides the fun of having a team and rolling a ball down the alley to hit a few pins, there are sometimes fun cash prizes and pools that go along with the game of bowling. The point of this is to have something to work for. Some leagues will have strike pools or spare pools. This is when team members put in money to play the game. The first person to get a certain amount of strikes or spares wins the total amount of money that everyone put in. If no one wins it one week or two, then the money keeps adding up until someone finally wins it. Bowling Leagues normally attract an older crowd whether it is duck pin bowling or even just regular bowling itself. However, more recently, there have been more youth bowling leagues. Putnam . It was originally a 1995 essay entitled Bowling Alone America s Declining Social Capital . Summary In Bowling Alone America s Declining Social Capital 1995 Putnam surveys the decline of social capital in the United States of America since 1950. He has described the reduction in all the forms of in person social intercourse upon which Americans used to found, educate, and enrich the fabric of their social lives. He believes this undermines the active civil engagement a strong democracy required from its citizens. Putnam discusses ways in which Americans have disengaged from political involvement including decreased voter turnout, public meeting attendance, serving on committees and working with political parties. Putnam also cites Americans growing distrust in their government. Putnam accepts the possibility that this lack of trust could be attributed to the long litany of political tragedies and scandals since the 1960s see paragraph 13 ..., Putnam uses bowling as an example.
