Description The combs used have long metal teeth, and only barely resemble the comb used on hair . However, they are used in a similar fashion with one comb holding the fibre while the other is moved through, slowly transferring the fibre to the moving comb. ref Harvnb Collier 1970 p 68 ref Combing the fibres removes the short fibres and arranges the fibre in a flat bundle, with all the fibres going the same direction. This preparation is commonly used to spin a worsted yarn. Woollen yarns cannot be spun from fibre prepared with combs, instead the fibre must be Carding carded . The Ramsey Psalter Harleian Collection Harley MS 2904 is an illuminated manuscript of the tenth century. Its script and decoration suggest that it was made at Winchester , but certain liturgical features have suggested that it was intended for use at the Benedictine monastery of Ramsey , or for the personal use of Ramsey s founder St Oswald . The litany includes a gold lettered triple invocation of St Benedict of Nursia, and at the time of writing, probably before Oswald s death in 992, Ramsey was the only monastery dedicated to this saint. Dome received his BSEE in 1926 from Purdue University , and worked for General Electric in Syracuse, New York . The figures of the faun s at bottom, and almost the dragons at top, are moresques. Moresque is an obsolete alternative to Moors Moorish in English, and in the arts has some specific meanings. By itself the word is used of forms found in ornament and decoration in the applied arts in Europe. Often it is a synonym for arabesque or interlace art interlace patterns in the Mannerist and Northern Mannerist styles of the 16th century, derived from Islamic ornament. It was defined in 1611 by Randle Cotgrave s A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues as a rude or anticke painting, or carving, wherin the feet and tayles of beasts, &c, are intermingled with, or made to resemble, a kind of wild leaves, &c. ref OED , Moresque ref The word is also used for such a figure, starting off as a human or animal, but terminating as part of a decorative scheme of foliage or geometric strapwork . The Portmahomack sculpture fragments are the slabs and stone fragments which have been discovered at the Easter Ross settlement of Portmahomack Tarbat . There are around 200 of these fragments, each the size of a handspan or larger, making Portmahomack one of the major centres of rediscovered Pictish art. Nineteen pieces were found in and around the churchyard before 1994, and the remainder were found during formal archaeological investigations by the University of York between 1994 and 2007 Tarbat Discovery Programme . The excavation director, Martin Carver has proposed that the majority of the carved pieces originated in four monumental crosses or cross slabs of exceptional size and elaboration, placed around the site of St Colman s Church. One of these TR1 carried four Pictish symbols, a second TR2 had snake headed interlace visual arts interlace . A third TR10, 20 , features images of a complex beast and a row of apostles carrying books. This same stone originally carried along one edge a Latin language Latin inscription, blockquote IN NOMINE IHU XRI CRUX XRI IN COMMEMORATIONE REO... LII... History It is a medieval church dedicated to Helena of Constantinople St Helen dating from the 13th century. It was heavily restored by the Rector, Canon Frederick Heathcote Sutton and the architect George Frederick Bodley between 1874 and 1876. The chancel a rebuild of 1812 was entirely demolished by Bodley in 1874. He added the reredos in 1887. The bells were repaired and refurbished in 1881 by John Taylor of Loughborough . The wrought ironwork, gates, railings, candlesticks and candelabra were made by the village blacksmith, F. Coldron. It is said to have the most elegant spire in Lincolnshire. The spire although reduced in height in 1897 is convert 198 ft m high. Parts of the church date back to about 1290 though most dates back to about the late 14th century.
