Essay date November 2009 Refimprove date November 2009 The Imaginary , first published in French language French in 1940 , is one of Jean Paul Sartre Jean Paul Sartre s important but often overlooked works. It lays out Sartre s concepts of the imagination and what it says about the nature of human consciousness that we can imagine at all. Arguments There are two important points Sartre stresses in the book. First, while some believe imagining to be like an internal perception, Sartre argues that imagination is nothing like perception. Perception is our study over time of a particular object with our senses. It is necessarily incomplete one can only see one side of a chair at a time, for example. Thus, perception involves observation. By contrast, imagination is total. In the chair that appears in our imagination, we have all sides of the chair given to us at once. However, Sartre points out that imaginary objects cannot teach us anything. The totality of the chair that appears in our imagination ... what goes on when we picture something imaginary, quasi observation. Imaginary objects are a melange of past impressions and recent knowledge The Imaginary 90 . In short, imaginary objects are what we intend them to be. Analogon Sartre says that what is required for the imaginary process to occur is an analogon ... the mental image we conjure when we think of someone or something. Refimprove date March 2007 The imaginary audience refers to an egocentrism egocentric state where an individual imagines and believes that multitudes of people are enthusiastically listening to him or her at all times. Though this state is often exhibited in young adolescence , people of any age may harbor a fantasy of an imaginary audience. In extreme cases, belief in an imaginary audience can lead to paranoia as the sufferer believes he or she is being watched by an invisible audience at all times. Fearing that he or she is being observed and evaluated, such an individual may develop a phobia of making mistakes or looking foolish in public. In the case of social networks, a person will never know who views their profile, their friends, and their comments. No footnotes date September 2009 One source date September 2009 Refimprove date September 2009 An imaginary , or social imaginary is the set of values, institutions, laws, and symbols common to a particular social group and the corresponding society. Jacques Lacan introduced the term in 1936 and continued to use it throughout his work as one of the three orders in his psychoanalytic theory. The imaginary as a lacanian term refers to an illusion and fascination with an image of the body as coherent unity. This illusion of coherence, control and totality is by no means unnecessary or inconsequential as something that is illusory . Hence the imaginary in the psychoanalytic sense derives from the dual relationship between the ego and the specular or mirror image. In 1975, Cornelius Castoriadis used the term in his book The Imaginary Institution of Society . In 1995 Technoscientific Imaginaries was used as the title of a volume ethnographically exploring contemporary science and technology. An equivalence formula is a formula &phi x , y that is a symmetric and transitive relation. Its domain is the set of elements a of M sup n sup such that &phi a , a it is an equivalence relation on its domain. An imaginary element a &phi of M is an equivalence formula &phi together with an equivalence class a . M has elimination of imaginaries if for every imaginary element a &phi there is a formula &theta x , y such that there is a unique tuple b so that the equivalence class of a consists of the tuples x such that &theta x , b A model has uniform elimination of imaginaries if the formula &theta can be chosen independently of a . A theory has elimination of imaginaries if every model does and similarly for uniform elimination . Examples ZFC set theory has elimination of imaginaries. Peano arithmetic has uniform elimination of imaginaries. A vector space of dimension at least 2 over a finite field with at least 3 elements does not have elimination of imaginaries.
