The city of Rotterdam now occupies most of the northern part of the island and includes the eponymous former village of IJsselmonde village IJsselmonde , once a separate community. The island was once a rich agriculture agricultural region, but is mostly suburb s today. Only the mid south parts of the island have retained their agricultural character. Zwijndrechtse Waard Originally the Zwijndrechtse Waard, on which the village of Zwijndrecht, Netherlands Zwijndrecht lies, was a separate river island, the western branch of river Waal river Waal separating the two. However, as the Waal stretch has been closed off at both ends, the Waard is now generally considered to be part of IJsselmonde. IJsselmonde is a former village in the Netherlands Dutch province of South Holland . It was located to the east of the city of Rotterdam . The village IJssel mouth derives its name from the river Hollandsche IJssel , which flows into the Nieuwe Maas opposite from the village.
