unreferenced date March 2011 The Humours of an Election is a series of four oil painting s and later engraving s by William Hogarth that illustrate British general election, 1754 the election of a Parliament of Great Britain member of parliament in List of Parliamentary constituencies in Oxfordshire Oxfordshire in 1754. The oil paintings were created in 1755. The first three paintings, An Election Entertainment , Canvassing for Votes and The Polling , demonstrate the Political corruption corruption endemic in Unreformed House of Commons parliamentary United Kingdom general elections elections in the 18th century, before the Reform Act 1832 Great Reform Act . The last painting, Chairing the Member , shows the celebrations of the victorious Tory candidates and their supporters. At this time each United Kingdom constituencies constituency elected two MPs, and there was a Suffrage Social class property qualification for voters, so only a minority of the male population was enfranchised.
