div style text align right float right margin left 5px Timeline House of Alpin div The House of Alpin is the name given to the kin group which ruled in Pictland and then the kingdom of Alba from the advent of Cin ed mac Ailp n in the 840s until the death of M el Coluim mac Cin eda in 1034. Kings traced their descent from Cin ed mac Ailp n, and not from his father, and Irish genealogies in the Book of Ballymote and the Book of Lecan refer to the kindred as Clann Cin eda meic Ailp n, prioritising descent from Cin ed. ref Woolf, Pictland to Alba , pp. 222&ndash 224 Broun, Irish Identity, pp. 173&ndash 174. ref The origins of the family are uncertain. Later genealogies of doubtful reliability make Cin ed a descendant of ed Find . While plausible, such claims are unprovable and appear only in the late tenth century. ref Woolf, Pictland to Alba , p. 173. ref The associated idea that Cin ed had been a king in D l Riata before contending successfully for power in Pictland in the 840s, following the death of E gan n mac engusa , is supported by near contemporary evidence. ref Woolf, Pictland to Alba , pp. 93&ndash 98 & 116&ndash 117. ref Early kings of Clann Cin eda meic Ailp n are described as kings of the Picts , and the third king, Constant n mac Cin eda appears to have been regarded as the last of the seventy Pictish kings soon after his death. The descendants of Cin ed were ousted in 878 when ed mac Cin eda was killed by Giric mac D ngail . They returned in 889 on the death of Giric ... Cin ed came to an end. Unreferenced date May 2007 Alasdair Alpin MacGregor 1899 1970 was a Scotland Scottish writer and photographer, known for a large number of travel books. He wrote also on Scottish folklore , and was a published poet. He was brought up in Tain and Inverness , and educated there and in Edinburgh . His books were mainly about Scotland, and his romanticising style incurred the displeasure of Compton Mackenzie , who caricatured him in some of his novels perhaps unjustly so as MacGregor was forced to be critically realistic about certain aspects of life on the west coast, in his book The western Isles . Judging by the title of the 1931 book A Last Voyage to St. Kilda. Being the Observations and Adventures of an Egotistic Private Secretary who was alleged to have been warned off That Island by Admiralty Officials when attempting to emulate Robinson Crusoe at the Time of Its Evacuation there might have been something to caricature. The same book was the subject of a legal case when MacGregor brought an injunction to prevent the distribution of The Edge of the World , a film by Michael Powell director Michael Powell that he claimed was based on it. MacGregor lost the case. He lived in London for most of his adult life in Swan Court and Upper Cheyne Row, Chelsea. His book about his childhood, The Goat Wife , tells the evocative story of his hard working and resourceful Aunt Dorothy, who left a comfortable existence in Edinburgh s Ann Street reputed to be the most haunted street in Edinburgh to begin life as a solo crofter in the Easter Ross village of Ardgay then known locally as High Wind .
