  1. Réunion hotspot

unreferenced date December 2007 Image Piton de la Fournaise 1.JPG thumb right 250px Piton de la Fournaise , an active shield volcano was formed by the R union hotspot. The R union hotspot is a volcanic hotspot geology hotspot which currently lies under the Island of R union in the Indian Ocean . The hotspot is believed to have been active for over 65 million years. A huge eruption of this hotspot 65 million years ago is thought to have laid down the Deccan Traps , a vast bed of basalt lava that covers part of central India , and opened a rift which separated India from the Mascarene Plateau Seychelles Plateau . The Deccan Traps eruption coincided with the extinction of the dinosaur s, and there is considerable speculation that the two events were related. As the Indian plate drifted north, the hotspot continued to punch through the plate, creating a string of volcanic islands and undersea plateaus. The Laccadive Islands , the Maldives , and the Chagos Archipelago are atoll s resting on former volcanoes created 60 45 million years ago that subsequently submerged below sea level. About 45 million years ago the rift geology mid ocean rift crossed over the hotspot, and the hotspot passed under the African Plate . The hotspot appears to have been relatively quiet from 45 10 million years ago, when activity resumed, creating the Mascarene Islands , which include Mauritius , R union , and Rodrigues island Rodrigues . Mauritius and Rodrigues Ridge were created 8 10 million years ago, and Rodrigues and R union Islands in the last two million years. Almost all magma created by the hotspot has the composition of basalt , and so the volcanoes are constructed almost entirely of this igneous rock . The eruptions from the Bowie hotspot are effusive eruption s because basaltic magma is relatively fluid compared with magmas typically involved in more explosive eruption s, such as the andesite andesitic magmas that produce some of the spectacular and dangerous eruptions around the margins of the Pacific Ocean . Bowie hotspot is believed to be perhaps 100 to 150  km wide and underlain by a mantle plume that is relatively deep.
