  1. On Horsemanship

Unreferenced date December 2009 On Horsemanship written c. 350 BC by Xenophon is one of the earliest extant treatises on horsemanship in the Western world the oldest is the one written by Kikkuli of the Mitanni Kingdom . In it, Xenophon details the selection, care, and training of horse s both for Cavalry military and general use. One of the most important qualities in a horse, Xenophon writes, is that it have a fleshy or double back. This presumably is because Xenophon wrote this treatise before the invention of the saddle . Xenophon s On Horsemanship is one of the oldest surviving Western works detailing the principles of classical dressage , including training the horse in a manner that is non abusive. In On Horsemanship , Xenophon himself pays tribute to better established works by apparently more celebrated contemporary horsemen&mdash in particular, a trainer and writer referred to only as Simon &mdash but no known copies of these other texts have survived into the modern era. Citation needed date September 2010 Translations A widely known English translation of Xenophon s Art of Horsemanship is the 1893 edition by Morris H. Morgan, reprinted in facsimile by Dover Publications . Several public domain versions of these have been printed. There is also a 2010 translation by Classical Greek scholar Dr A. Nyland. Part I Selecting a Young Horse Image East pediment O Parthenon BM.jpg right thumb 350px The ideal head of the warhorse Xenophon details what is to be examined when inspecting a horse to buy as a war mount. 1. Parelli Natural Horsemanship

POV date January 2009 Parelli Natural Horsemanship also known as Parelli or PNH is a program of natural horsemanship . It was created by Pat Parelli. The Program Parelli Natural Horsemanship is a program that uses a natural approach to communicating with horses, based on natural equine behaviors, to achieve trust and respect in the horse human relationship. PNH methods are mentally, emotionally and physically similar to the ways that horses act with one another within a herd. PNH allows for thresholds, boundaries and fears for both horse and human, and encourages issues to be worked through, using mutual communication, leadership and love. Key components in this are attitude, knowledge, tools, techniques, time and imagination. In the program, it is recognized that both the horse and human have responsibilities in the partnership. One aim of the program is to preserve the dignity of the horse by continuously watching for subtle cues in the horses posture, movements and facial expressions. 1. Tom and Bill Dorrance

Brothers Tom Dorrance May 11, 1910 June 11, 2003 and Bill Dorrance January 19, 1906 July 20, 1999 are considered among the founders of the modern Natural horsemanship movement. Born and raised on an Oregon cattle ranch with a background in the Great Basin cowboy Buckaroo tradition, they promoted natural, gentle methods of horse training , emphasizing feel of the horse and observation of its responses to the handler. They had a particularly strong influence on Ray Hunt and Hunt s disciple, Buck Brannaman as well as Arabian horse breeder and trainer Sheila Varian . Many horse trainers claim influence from the Dorrance brothers. The thing you are trying to help the horse do is to use his own mind. You are trying to present something and then let him figure out how to get there. Tom Dorrance ref True Unity, First Edition, Word Dancer Press, 2003 ref When people think of natural horsemanship that could mean a lot of things. It isn t natural for a horse to be around people, and it s not natural for a person to be sitting on him either. 1. Mark Rashid

Mark Rashid is an American horse training horse trainer and clinician from Colorado . Practicing within the western riding tradition, Rashid s philosophy involves understanding the horse s point of view and solving difficult problems with communication rather than force. His methodology emphasizes the relationship between horse and rider as a partnership, in which the horse willingly takes direction from the rider, rather than a dominant rider directing a submissive horse. While Rashid is grouped as a practitioner within the field of natural horsemanship , he personally tends to avoid that classification and has publicly expressed discomfort with the term when applied to himself and to horsemanship in general. ref http www.markrashid.com blog.html Rashid editorializing on the concept of Natural horsemanship ref He has written a number of books on his philosophy, including Big Horses, Good Dogs, & Straight Fences , Horsemanship Through Life , Life Lessons from a Ranch Horse , Horses Never Lie , A Good Horse is Never a Bad Color , and Considering the Horse .
