  1. Homeric Greek

History of the Greek language Homeric Greek is the form of Ancient Greek that was used by Homer in the Iliad and Odyssey . It is an archaic version of Ionic Greek , with admixtures from certain other dialects, such as Aeolic Greek . It later served as the basis of Epic Greek , the language of epic poetry , typically in dactylic hexameter , of poets such as Hesiod . Unlike later forms of the language, Homeric Greek did not have available in most circumstances a true definite article . ref Goodwin, William W. 1879 . A Greek Grammar pp 204 . 1. Homeric simile

Homeric simile , also called epic simile , is a detailed comparison in the form of a simile that is many lines in length. The word Homeric is based on the Greek author, Homer , who composed the two famous Greek epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey . Many authors continue to use this type of simile in their writings. The typical Homeric simile makes a comparison to some kind of event, in the form like a when it . The object of the comparison is usually something familiar to the audience, such as an animal or the weather. The Iliad , for instance, contains many such similes comparing fighting warriors to lions attacking wild boars or other prey. Some, such as Professor G.P. Shipp, have argued that Homer s similes appear to be irregular in relation to the text, as if they were added later. ref Shipp, G.P. 2007 . Studies in the Language of Homer . Cambridge Cambridge University Press. ISBN 052103826X. ref On the other hand, William Clyde Scott, in his book The Oral Nature of the Homeric Simile , suggests that Homer s similes are originally based on the similarities of the similes and their surrounding narrative text. Scott argues that Homer primarily uses similes to introduce his characters, sometimes to glorify them and sometimes merely to call attention to them. He uses Agamemnon as an example, noting that each time he reenters the battle he is described with a simile. ref Iliad 11.292, 295 and 15.263 ref However, he also points out that Homer s similes serve as a poetic device in order to foreshadow and keep the reader interested just as the fateful, climactic confrontation of Achilles and Hector. ref Scott, William Clyde. The Oral Nature of the Homeric Simile . Leiden, Brill, 1974. ref In her article On Homer s Similes , Eleanor Rambo agrees with Scott that the similes are intentional, also noting that Homer s use of similes deepen the reader s understanding of the individual ... 2 Category Literary devices Category Homeric style literature stub ...   more details

Characters communicate with their gods through prayers, in an act which merges the divine world of the epic creation with that of mankind. Gods usually hear, often react and sometimes grant human prayers in epic poetry. But Zeus does not bring to accomplishment all thoughts in men s minds Iliad, XVIII 328 , as Achilleus stresses in admitting humanity s restrained power. In modern Homeric scholarship many of Homer s nods are explicable as the consequences of the poem being retold and improvised by generations of oral poets.
