  1. Helium planet

refimprove date August 2010 A helium planet is a theoretical type of planet that may form via mass loss from a low mass white dwarf star. Ordinary gas giant planets such as Jupiter and Saturn consist primarily of hydrogen, with helium as a secondary component. But a helium planet might form in an environment where all the hydrogen has been processed to helium or other heavier elements by nuclear burning. Origin One scenario involves an AM CVn type of symbiotic binary star composed of two helium core white dwarf stars surrounded by a circumbinary helium accretion disk formed during mass transfer from the less massive to the more massive white dwarf. After it loses most of its mass, the less massive white dwarf may approach planetary mass. ref cite journal id arxiv 0707.2895 journal ApJ title Mass Radius Relationships for Solid Exoplanets first S. last Seager coauthors M. 1. Antiprotonic helium

An antiprotonic helium atom is a three body object composed of an antiproton and an electron orbiting around a helium Atomic nucleus nucleus . It is thus made partly of matter, and partly of antimatter. The atom is electrically neutral, since both electrons and antiprotons have a charge of 1, whereas helium nuclei have a charge of 2. The antiprotonic helium atom is called an atomcule, as it has a structure like an atom, but has two nuclei like a molecule. Production These exotic atoms can be produced by simply mixing antiprotons with ordinary helium gas in this reaction the antiproton first removes one of the two electrons contained in a normal helium atom How? , and then begins to orbit the helium nucleus in the electron s place. The antiproton s orbit, which has a large principal quantum number and angular momentum quantum number of around 38, lies far away from the surface of the helium nucleus. The antiproton can thus orbit the nucleus for many microseconds, before finally falling to its surface and annihilation annihilating . This remarkably long lifetime is seen only in the case of antiprotons mixed in helium in all other substances, antiprotons annihilate a million times faster, in less than a picosecond. Laser spectroscopy Antiprotonic helium is under study by the ASACUSA experiment at CERN . In these experiments, the atoms are first produced by stopping a beam of antiprotons in helium gas. The atoms are then irradiated by powerful laser beams, which cause the antiprotons in them to resonate and jump from one atomic orbit to another. 1. Helium fusion

Helium fusion is a kind of nuclear fusion , with the atomic nucleus nuclei involved being helium . The fusion of helium 4 nuclei alpha particle s is known as the triple alpha process , because fusion of just two helium nuclei only produces beryllium 8, which is unstable and breaks back down to two helium nuclei with a half life of 1× 10 sup 16 sup to 2.6× 10 sup 16 sup seconds. If the core temperature of a star exceeds 100 million kelvin s 100 megakelvins, 8.6 KeV , as may happen in the later phase of red giant s and red supergiant s, then a third helium nucleus has a significant chance of fusing with the beryllium 8 nucleus before it breaks down, thus forming carbon 12. Depending upon the temperature and density, an additional helium nucleus may fuse with carbon 12 to form oxygen 16, and at very high temperatures, additional fusions of helium to oxygen and heavier nuclei may occur see alpha process . The fusion of helium 3 with itself or with helium 4 occurs during the fusion of hydrogen in main sequence stars see proton proton chain , and is not ordinarily referred to as helium fusion. 1. National Helium Reserve

The National Helium Reserve , also known as the Federal Helium Reserve , is a strategic reserve of the United States holding over a billion cubic feet of helium gas. The helium is stored at the Cliffside Storage Facility about convert 12 mi km northwest of Amarillo, Texas in a natural geologic gas storage formation. The reserve was established in 1925 as a strategic supply of gas for airship s, and in the 1950s became an important source of coolant during the Space Race and Cold War . The facilities were located to be close to the Hugoton Natural Gas Area Hugoton and other natural gas fields in southwest Kansas and the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma. The natural gas in these fields contains unusually high percentages of helium, from 0.3 to 2.7 they constitute the largest source of helium in the United States. The helium is separated as a byproduct from the produced natural gas. After the Helium Acts Amendments of 1960 Public Law 86 777 , the United States Bureau of Mines U.S. Bureau of Mines arranged for five private plants to recover helium from natural gas. For this helium conservation program, the Bureau built a convert 425 mi km sing on pipeline from Bushton, Kansas to connect those plants with the government s partially depleted Cliffside gas field. 1. Helium dilution technique

Orphan date September 2006 att March 2011 refimprove date April 2010 The helium dilution technique is the way of measuring the functional residual capacity of the lung s the volume left in the lung s after normal expiration . This technique is a closed circuit system where a spirometer is filled with a mixture of helium He and oxygen. The amount of He in the spirometer is known at the beginning of the test Concentration Volume Amount . The patient is then asked to breathe normal breaths in the mixture starting from FRC Functional Residual Capacity , which is the gas volume in the lung after a normal breath. The spirometer measures helium concentration. The helium spreads into the lungs of the patient, and settles at a new concentration C2 . Because there is no leak of substances in the system, the amount of helium remains constant during the test, and the FRC is calculated by using the following equation C1 V1 C2 V2 C1 V1 C2 V1 FRC FRC V1 C1 C2 C2 V2 Total gas volume FRC volume of spirometer . V1 Volume of gas in spirometer. C1 Initial known Helium Concentration. C2 Final Helium concentration Measured by the spirometer . Note To measure FRC we connect the patient to the spirometer directly after a normal breath when the lung volume equals FRC , if the patient is initially connected to the spirometer at a different lung volume like TLC or RV the measured volume will be the initial volume we started from and not FRC. 1. Helium release valve

A helium release valve , or helium escape valve , as it is also called, is a feature found on some diving watches . It provides functionality for Professional diving professional divers operating at great depths for prolonged periods of time or under Saturation diving saturation . When commercial divers operate at great depths, they often spend prolonged hours in Diving bell diving bells under pressure breathing a breathing gas mix like Trimix breathing gas trimix or similar, that contain the gases helium or hydrogen . Since helium atoms are the smallest natural gas particles found in nature, these gas atoms are able to work their way inside the watch, around any o rings or other seals the watch may feature.
