  1. Dynamic height

Dynamic height is a way of specifying the height of a point above a reference, as opposed to orthometric height or normal height . Dynamic height is constant if one follows the same gravity potential as they move from place to place. Because of variations in gravity, surfaces having a constant difference in dynamic height may be closer or further apart in various places. Dynamic heights are usually chosen so that zero corresponds to the geoid. When optical leveling is done, the path corresponds closely to following a value of dynamic height horizontally, but to orthometric height for vertical changes measured on the leveling rod. Thus small corrections must be applied to field measurements to obtain the orthometric height usually used in engineering. US National Geodetic Survey data sheets ref http www.ngs.noaa.gov ref give both dynamic and orthometric values. References Reflist Category Geodesy ...   more details

  1. Height gauge

File GaugeHeightVernier Electronic.jpg thumb The left height gauge has the vernier scale, while the right one is an electronic height gauge with a digital readout. Unreferenced date May 2009 A height gauge is a measuring device used either for determining the height of something, or for repetitious marking of items to be worked on. The former type of height gauge is often used in doctor s surgeries to find the height of people. These measuring tools are used in metalworking or metrology to either set or measure vertical distances the pointer is sharpened to allow it to act as a scriber and assist in marking out work pieces. They may also be used to measure the height of an object by using the underside of the scriber as the datum. The datum may be permanently fixed or the height gauge may have provision to adjust the scale, this is done by sliding the scale vertically along the body of the height gauge by turning a fine feed screw at the top of the gauge then with the scriber set to the same level as the base, the scale can be matched to it. This adjustment allows different scribers or probes to be used, as well as adjusting for any errors in a damaged or resharpened probe. Types There are two types of height gauges Vernier height gauges and electronic height gauges . The vernier height gauge has the additional refinement of a vernier scale for greater accuracy in reading or setting the tool. The electronic height gauge has a digital readout that gives the height. gallery Image VernierHeightGauge CloseUpAdj.jpg Vernier height gauge adjusters, close up view Image VernierHeightGauge CloseUp.jpg Vernier height gauge, close up view Image VernierHeightGauge ElectronicCloseUp.jpg Electronic height gauge, close up view gallery See also Caliper Coordinate mapping Metalworking navbox toolopen Category Dimensional instruments Category Metalworking measuring instruments es Calibrador de altura con vernier id Height gauge nl Krasblok ja ru uk ...   more details

  1. Bob Height

Bob Height was an African American blackface minstrel show minstrel performer. He was a standout talent in the companies with which he performed, although frustrations eventually drove him to pursue a career in Europe. Later writers have compared him to his contemporary, Bert Williams . ref Toll 203. ref Height joined with Charles Hicks in the late 1860s to form Hicks and Height s Georgia Minstrels . This company proved quite popular among African Americans, particularly in the Washington, D.C. area. Eventually, both Hicks and Height joined Sam Hague Sam Hague s Sam Hague s Slave Troupe of Georgia Minstrels Slave Troupe of Georgia Minstrels . Height became a featured talent and accompanied the troupe on a European tour in the early 1870s. Upon the troupe s return to the US in 1872, Charles Callender purchased it and changed the name to Callender s Original Georgia Minstrels . The new owner helped lead the company to great success, and Height enjoyed high billing alongside Billy Kersands and Pete Devonear . Before long, however, Height and several other performers quit Callender s in a dispute over pay and recognition. They formed a new company, but it saw little success most of the players soon rejoined Callender s troupe. Height instead emigrated to Europe, where he performed for many years. 1. Orthometric height

Refimprove date December 2009 The orthometric height is the distance H along a line of force from a given point P at the physical surface of an object to the geoid . Orthometric heights are what are usually used in the US for ordinary engineering work. Values for measured points can be obtained from the National Geodetic Survey data sheets ref http www.ngs.noaa.gov ref . This data was gathered over many years by massive projects of precise optical leveling. Orthometric heights relate approximately to the height above sea level but the current NAVD88 datum is tied to a specific elevation at a chosen point rather than to any location s exact mean sea level. GPS measurements give ECEF earth centered coordinates , usually displayed as height above the reference ellipsoid , which cannot be related accurately to orthometric height above the geoid unless accurate gravity data is available for that location. NGS is undertaking the GRAV D program to obtain such data. ref http www.ngs.noaa.gov GRAV D ref Alternatives to orthometric height include dynamic height and normal height . 1. Geopotential height

Geopotential height is a vertical coordinate referenced to Earth s mean sea level an adjustment to geometric height elevation above mean sea level using the variation of gravity with latitude and elevation. Thus it can be considered a gravity adjusted height. One usually speaks of the geopotential height of a certain pressure level , which would correspond to the geopotential height necessary to reach the given pressure. At an elevation of math h math , the geopotential is defined as math Phi int 0 h g phi,z ,dz , , math where math g phi,z math is the acceleration due to gravity, math phi math is latitude, and math z math is the geometric elevation. Thus, it is the gravitational potential energy per unit mass at that level. The geopotential height is math Z g frac Phi g 0 ,, math where math g 0 math is the standard gravity at mean sea level. Geophysical scientists often use geopotential height rather than geometric height, because doing so in many cases makes analytical calculations more convenient. For example, the primitive equations which weather forecast models solve are more easily expressed in terms of geopotential than geometric height. Using the former eliminates centrifugal force and air density which is very difficult to measure in the equations. A plot of geopotential height for a single pressure level shows the troughs and ridges, Highs and Lows, which are typically seen on upper air charts. The geopotential thickness between pressure levels difference of the 850 Pascal unit hPa and 1000 hPa geopotential heights for example is proportional to mean virtual temperature in that layer. Geopotential height contours can be used to calculate the geostrophic wind , which is faster where the contours are more closely spaced and tangential to the geopotential height contours. 1. Normal height

Unreferenced date December 2009 Normal heights are heights above sea level , one of several types of height which are all computed slightly differently. Alternatives are orthometric height s and dynamic height s. The normal height math H math of a point is computed from geopotential height geopotential numbers by dividing the point s geopotential number, i.e. its geopotential difference with that of sea level, by the average, normal gravity computed along the plumbline of the point. More precisely, along the ellipsoid al normal, averaging over the height range from 0 the ellipsoid to math H math the procedure is thus recursive. Normal heights are thus dependent upon the reference ellipsoid chosen. The Soviet Union and many other Eastern European countries have chosen a height system based on normal heights, determined by geodetic precise levelling. Normal gravity values are easy to compute and hypothesis free , i.e., one does not have to know, as one would for computing orthometric heights, the density of the Earth s crust around the plumbline. Normal heights figure prominently in the theory of the Earth s gravity field developed by the school of M.S. Molodenskii . The reference surface that normal heights are measured from is called the quasi geoid , a representation of mean sea level similar to the geoid and close to it, but lacking the physical interpretation of an equipotential surface. 1. Cloud height

Refimprove date February 2009 Nofootnotes date February 2009 The cloud height or the height of the cloud is the distance between the cloud base and the cloud top . It is traditionally expressed either in metre s or as a pressure difference in hectopascal hPa, equivalent to millibar . Sometimes, the expression cloud height is used instead of cloud base , in which case the context has to clarify whether the intent is to designate the elevation or the size of the cloud. Measurement Cloud height is not measured directly, but derived from separate measurements of cloud base and cloud top altitudes. Weather and climate relevance Cloud height is often related to the intensity of precipitation generated by a cloud deeper clouds tend to produce more intense rainfall. For instance, cumulonimbus cloud s can develop vertically through a substantial part of the troposphere and often result in thunderstorm s with lightning and heavy showers. By contrast, very thin clouds such as cirrus clouds do not generate any precipitation at the surface.
