The title of the overture Aotearoa is taken from the M ori language M ori name for the islands. Lilburn wrote the overture while he was still a student at London s Royal College of Music , and it was premiered in Great Britain , at His Majesty s Theatre in London. It was not performed in New Zealand until 1959, but it has since entered the standard orchestral repertory there. Brahms chose the title tragedy Tragic to emphasize the turbulent, tormented character of the piece, in essence a free standing symphonic movement, in contrast to the mirthful ebullience of a companion piece he wrote the same year, the Academic Festival Overture . Despite its name, the Tragic Overture does not follow any specific dramatic program music program . Brahms was not very interested in musical storytelling and was more concerned with conveying and eliciting emotional impressions. He summed up the effective difference between the two overtures when he declared one laughs while the other cries. Brahms quotes some material from the last movement of the Symphony No. 2 Brahms Second Symphony in this overture. Wagner originally composed it from 1839 40, intending it to be the first movement of a Faust Symphony based on the play Faust Part One Faust by German playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . Unreferenced date December 2009 Cuban Overture is a symphonic overture or tone poem for orchestra composed by American composer George Gershwin . Originally titled Cuban Rumba Rumba , it was a result of a two week holiday which Gershwin took in Havana , Cuba in February 1932. Gershwin composed the piece in July and August 1932. The overture is dominated by Caribbean rhythms and Cuban native percussion, with a wide spectrum of instrumental color and technique. It is a rich and exciting work with complexity and sophistication, illustrating the influence of Cuban music and dance. Its main theme was influenced by a then current hit by Ignacio Pi eiro , chale Salsita . The overture is in ternary form . Premi re The work under the title Rumba received its premi re at New York s now demolished Lewisohn Stadium in 16 August 1932, as part of an all Gershwin programme held by New York Philharmonic . The concert was a huge success. As Gershwin wrote It was, I really believe, the most exciting night I have ever had...17,845 people paid to get in and just about 5,000 were at the closed gates trying to fight their way in unsuccessfully. The work was greeted favorably by critics. It was renamed Cuban Overture three months later at a benefit concert conducted by Gershwin at the Metropolitan Opera to avoid giving audience the idea that it was simply a novelty item. The new title provided, as the composer stated, a more just idea of the character and intent of the music. Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 The Drysdale Overture of 1937 is among the earliest works for orchestra by New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn . The piece was written while Lilburn was a student at the Royal College of Music , and was based on something of a challenge from his professor, Ralph Vaughan Williams . Reportedly, Vaughan Williams had begun his teaching by asking Lilburn to write fugue s and part song s one day, though, he asked, Isn t it time you composed something? Lilburn responded by producing the overture. Lilburn later reported that his score greatly upset George Dyson composer Sir George Dyson , to whom he brought it for piano reduction. Dyson found it to be a mess he did, however, give it a read through with the College orchestra. The overture is dedicated to Robert Lilburn, the composer s father. It is meant to celebrate the family farm and estate upon which Lilburn was born. In writing it, the composer once wrote that he was left with that lovely Mark Twain image of Jim and Huckleberry Finn character Huckleberry drifting on their barge down that great river, looking up at the stars and wondering whether they was made, or only just happened The Drysdale Overture has been recorded by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra under William Southgate Sir William Southgate .
