  1. Iroko (hardwood)

File Iroko wood.jpg thumb 350px Iroko wood Iroko is a hardwood from tropical Africa . It is one of the woods sometimes referred to as African Teak , although it is not always suitable as a substitute for teak . Color is initially yellow but darkens to a richer brown over time. It is yielded mostly probably by Milicia excelsa . In much of the literature on this timber the names of the trees that yields it are given as Chlorophora excelsa and Chlorophora regia . The wood is used for a variety of purposes including boat building, domestic flooring and furniture. From the late ?90s, it was used as part of the txalaparta , a Basque musical instrument constructed of wooden boards, due to its lively sound. It is a very durable wood Iroko does not require regular treatment with oil or varnish when used outdoors. Although it is almost as durable as teak it does not have the same stability. Although many Iroko suppliers state that their wood comes from sustainable sources, this is not necessarily the case. In the UK there are trade restrictions on the machining of this timber as the dust is known to be carcinogenic . In Yoruba culture , the people claim that the wood contains a spirit and that it is bad luck to cut down a Yoruba tree. In the forest of Ouidah in Benin and in numerous places in Nigeria there is a Iroko Tree which is regarded with the highest reverence. 1. Northern hardwood forest

The northern hardwood forest is a general type of North America n forest ecosystem found over much of southeastern and south central Canada , extending south into the United States in northern New England and New York , and west along the Great Lakes to Minnesota and western Ontario . Some ecologists consider it a transitional forest because it contains species common to both the oak hickory forest community to the south and the Boreal forest community to the north. The trees and shrub species of the Northern Hardwood Forest are known for their brilliant fall colors, making the regions that contain this forest type popular fall foliage tourist destinations. Sugar maple , yellow birch , American beech , hobblebush , and striped maple are the common key indicator tree and shrub species in the Northern Hardwood Forest. Other species include Tsuga canadensis eastern hemlock and eastern white pine . Herb and heath species include wintergreen , wild sarsaparilla , and wood sorrel . Birds and animals common to the Northern Hardwood Forest include the black capped chickadee , white throated sparrow , cedar waxwing , porcupine , snowshoe hare , white tailed deer , and American Red Squirrel . Most of the Northern Hardwood Forest is not virgin forest , it is regrowth following centuries of commercial timber harvesting and the clearing of land for agricultural purposes. This is particularly true of New England, New York, and Eastern Canada, where the land was cleared to make room for farms in the 17th and 18th centuries and subsequently abandoned in the 19th century when farming interests migrated to the midwestern United States and central Canada. The National Hardwood Floor Association was a group that organized prank calls to a Christian talk radio station in the USA . Overview The National Hardwood Floor Association released an album of political prank calls to Christian radio station KPDQ dn in 1992. The only known members of the group were Joel Schalit, who later became co editor of the magazine Punk Planet and was a member of the follow on group Christal Methodists and the post rock group Elders Of Zion and Electro Motive records owner and Wetgate member Peter Conheim, who joined Negativland in the late 1990s. 1. Hardwood timber production

No footnotes date July 2010 Hardwood timber production nowiki nowiki is the process of managing stands of deciduous trees to maximize woody output. The production process is not linear because other factors must be considered, including marketable and non marketable goods, financial benefits, management practices, and the environmental implications of those management practices. Forests include market and non market products. Marketable products include goods that have a market price. Timber is the main one, with prices that range from a few hundred dollars per thousand board feet MBF to several thousand dollars for a Wood veneer veneer log. Others include grazing fodder, specialty crops such as mushrooms or berries, usage fees for recreation or hunting, and biomass. Forests also provide some non market values which have no current market price. Examples of non market goods would be improving water quality, air quality, aesthetics, and carbon sequestration . The more biodiverse the hardwood forest ecosystem, the more challenges and opportunities its managers face. Managers aim for sustainable forest management to keep their cash crop renewing itself, using silvicultural practices that include harvesting, promoting regeneration, controlling insects and disease, fertilizing, applying herbicide treatments, and thinning. Fertilization can increase the growth rate and amount of plant material, thus possibly increasing the number of wildlife that can inhabit a site. Invasive species control maintains an area s structure and native composition. But management can also harm the ecosystem for example, machinery used in a timber harvest can compact the soil, stress the root system, reduce tree growth, lengthen the time needed for a stand to mature to harvestability. Machinery can also damage the understory , disturbing wildlife habitat and prevent regeneration. See also Forest farming References Nyland, R.D. 2002. Silviculture Concepts and Applications . 1. Weyerhaeuser Co. v. Ross-Simmons Hardwood Lumber Co.

Weyerhaeuser Co. v. Ross Simmons Hardwood Lumber Co. , 549 U.S. 312 2007 , was an antitrust case decided by the Supreme Court of the United States . Both parties operated sawmills Ross Simmons was driven out of business by what it complained was Weyerhaeuser s attempted monopolization of the market. The theory was predatory buying a purchaser buys so much of a given raw material that it drives up the price and thereby excludes less pecunious rivals who depend on the same raw material. The Supreme Court rejected the theory on a rule of reason analysis, noting that there are any number of legitimate business strategies that involve buying large quantities of raw materials. A plaintiff alleging predatory buying must therefore prove and Ross Simmons had not that the defendant caused the price to rise, and that the defendant is likely to recoup the costs incurred in such a scheme. The court s decision symmetrized its caselaw, with Weyerhaeuser and Brooke Group Ltd. v. Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. applying identical standards to predatory buying and predatory selling claims respectively.
