  1. Edinburgh Handedness Inventory

The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory is a measurement scale used to assess the dominance of a person s right or left hand in everyday activities. The inventory can be used by an observer assessing the person, or by a person self reporting hand use. The latter method tends to be less reliable due to a person over attributing tasks to the dominant hand. The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory was published in 1971 by R.C. 1. Handedness and sexual orientation

A relationship between handedness and sexual orientation has been suggested but not verified by a number of researchers, who report that heterosexual individuals are somewhat more likely to be right handed than homosexual individuals. The relationship between handedness and sexual orientation has been reported within both sexes and may reflect the biological etiology of homosexuality recent work by Ray Blanchard has linked the relationship to the fraternal birth order effect , which suggests that a man with several older brothers is more likely to be homosexual. Studies Mustanski et al., 2002 study Mustanski et al. examined sexual orientation and hand preference in a sample of 382 men 205 heterosexual 177 homosexual and 354 women 149 heterosexual 205 homosexual . 1. Hair whorl

A hair whorl is a patch of hair growing in the opposite direction of the rest of the hair. Hair whorls occur in most hairy animals, on the body as well as on the head. Hair whorls, also known as crowns, swirls, trichoglyphs, or cowlicks, can be either clockwise or counterclockwise in direction of growth. Hair whorls on the head parietal whorls have been studied by some behaviorists. Most people have clockwise scalp hair whorls. Parietal whorls which are considered to be normal scalp patterns could be a single whorl or double whorls. Cases of triple parietal whorls are less common but do not necessarily indicate abnormality. Citation needed date December 2008 Amar J. Klar conducted research to see if there was a genetic link between handedness and hair whorl direction. He found that 8.4 of right handed people and 45 of left handed people have counterclockwise hair whorls. Unreferenced date July 2010 Cross tabulation is the process of creating a contingency table from the multivariate frequency distribution of statistics statistical variables. Heavily used in survey research, cross tabulations or crosstabs for short can be produced by a range of statistical packages, including some that are specialised for the task. Survey weights often need to be incorporated. Unweighted tables can be easily produced by some spreadsheet s and other business intelligence tools , where they are commonly known as pivot table s. unreferenced date August 2008 stack file Visszat kr z s prizm n 2.jpg thumb Total internal reflection in Porro prism file Porro prism.png thumb A single Porro prism file Double porro prism.png thumb A double Porro prism In optics , a Porro prism , named for its inventor Ignazio Porro , is a type of reflection prism optics prism used in optical instruments to alter the orientation of an image . It consists of a block of glass shaped as a right prism geometry geometric prism with right angled triangular end faces. In operation, light enters the large rectangular face of the prism, undergoes total internal reflection twice from the sloped faces, and exits again through the large rectangular face. Because the light exits and enters the glass only at normal incidence, the prism is not dispersion optics dispersive . An image travelling through a Porro prism is rotated by 180 and exits in the opposite direction offset from its entrance point. Since the image is reflected twice, the handedness of the image is unchanged. Porro prisms are most often used in pairs, forming a double Porro prism . A second prism, rotated 90 with respect to the first, is placed such that the beam will traverse both prisms. The net effect of the prism system is a beam parallel to but displaced from its original direction, with the image rotated 180 . As before, the handedness of the image is unchanged. Double Porro prism systems are used in small optical telescope s to re orient an inverted image an arrangement is known as a image erection system , and especially in many binoculars where they both erect the image and provide a longer, folded distance between the objective lenses and the eyepieces. Commonly, the two components of the double Porro system are cemented together, and the prisms may be truncated to save weight and size. A single Porro prism is a type of roof prism , though it is not used in this way in binoculars. A variation on the double Porro prism is the Porro Abbe prism . optics st ...   more details

  1. Abbe?Koenig prism

Unreferenced date December 2009 Image Abbe koenig prism.png right An Abbe Koenig prism thumb 380px In this image, the bottom left and right corners of the prism are not needed and have been cut off to reduce weight. An Abbe Koenig prism is a type of reflecting prism optics prism used to invert an image rotate it by 180 . They are commonly used in binoculars and some telescope s for this purpose. The prism is named after Ernst Abbe and Albert Koenig . The prism is made from two glass prisms which are optically cemented together to form a symmetric, shallow Vee shaped assembly. Light enters one face at normal incidence, is total internal reflection internally reflected from a 30 sloped face, and then is reflected from a roof German Dach section consisting of two faces meeting at a 90 angle at the bottom of the prism. The light is then reflected from the opposite 30 face and exits, again at normal incidence. The net effect of the internal reflections is to flip the image both vertically and horizontally. This produces a 180 image rotation without changing the image s handedness , and allows use of the prism as an image erecting system . Unlike the more common double Porro prism configuration, the Abbe Koenig prism does not displace the output beam from the input beam, making it advantageous in some instruments. The prism is also less bulky than the double Porro design. The prism is sometimes simply called a roof prism , although this is ambiguous because other roof prisms exist, such as the Amici roof prism Amici and Schmidt Pechan prism Schmidt Pechan designs. A variant of the Abbe Koenig prism replaces the roof section of the prism with a single mirror coated reflecting surface. This type of prism flips the image vertically, but not laterally, changing the handedness of the image to the opposite sense.
