It opened in 1888 and was destroyed in April 1945 in a bombing raid its ruins were demolished after World War II . The construction of the theater, for around 900,000 Mark, was especially notable since it was the first new theater built in Berlin since the Wallner Theater 1864 in between 1964 and 1888 only renovations of old theaters and existing spaces had taken place. By order of director Oscar Blumenthal , the building, designed by architects Hermann von der Hude and Julius Hennicke , was constructed in less than a year, between October 1887 and September 1888, in the style of Renaissance Revival architecture , next to the Circus Krembser. Life Lessing attended university in Berlin and Bonn , after which he taught History of Decorative Arts in Berlin. In 1872 he was responsible for a large exhibition of decorative art in Berlin, which featured objects from the royal collection as well as privately held items, under the patronage of Crown Prince Frederick. The success of this exhibition led to the founding of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin, which Lessing led until his death in 1908. Career Lessing was born in Vienna to a dentist and a concert pianist. Before completing high school he was forced to leave Austria in 1939 because of Hitler s rise to power. He immigrated to the British Mandate for Palestine now Israel . His mother remained in Vienna and later died at Auschwitz . While in Israel Lessing studied at Haifa s technical college and then worked agricultural jobs on kibbutzim . He then joined the British Army as a photographer and aviator . After World War II , Lessing returned to Austria in 1947 and joined the Associated Press . David Seymour invited Lessing to join Magnum Photos in 1951 and Lessing became a full member in 1955. His photographs were published by such magazines as Life magazine Life , Paris Match , Picture Post , EPOCA and Quick Magazine. He documented politics in post war Europe , especially in Communist countries. In the 1960s Lessing turned to more cultural subjects such as art, science, and history, by taking portraits of poets, musicians, physicists, and astronomers. With these photographs, Lessing has produced more than 40 books. Lessing has taught in Arles , France , at the Venice Biennale , at the Salzburg Summer Academy , and at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna.
