  1. Goldbach's comet

Goldbach s comet ref Fliegel, Henry F. Robertson, Douglas S. Goldbach s Comet the numbers related to Goldbach s Conjecture Journal of Recreational Mathematics, v21 1 1 7, 1989. ref is the name given to a plot of the function math g E math , the so called Goldbach function . The Goldbach function is studied in relation to Goldbach s conjecture . The function math g E math is defined for all even integers math E 2 math to be the number of different ways in which E can be expressed as the sum of two primes. For example, math g 22 3 math since 22 can be expressed as the sum of two primes in three different ways math 22 11 11 5 17 3 19 math . Image goldbachs comet.gif The coloring of points in the above image is based on the value of math E 2 math modular arithmetic modulo 3. Anatomy of the Goldbach Comet An illuminating way of presenting the comet data is as a histogram . The function math g E math can be normalized by dividing by the locally averaged value of g , g sub av sub , taken over perhaps 1000 neighboring values of the even number E . The histogram can then be accumulated over a range of up to about 10 either side of a central E . Image Gbcomethista1.jpg 400 px right Such a histogram appears on the right. A series of well defined peaks is evident. Each of these peaks can be identified as being formed by a set of values of math E 2 math which have certain smallest factors. The major peaks correspond to lowest factors of 3, 5, 7 ... as labeled. As the lowest factors become higher the peaks move left and eventually merge to give the lowest value primary peak. There is in fact a hierarchy of peaks the main peaks are composed of subsidiary peaks, with a succession of second smallest factors of math E 2 math . This hierarchy continues until all factors are exhausted. Image gbcomethistoga2.jpg 300 px right The magnified section shows the succession of subsidiary peaks in more ... into account the narrowing of the peak width, is not much larger. Image petros.gif right thumb 125px Uncle Petros and Goldbach s Conjecture by Apostolos Doxiadis FAIR USE see image description page for rationale Uncle Petros and Goldbach s Conjecture is a 1992 in literature 1992 novel by Greek author Apostolos Doxiadis . It concerns a young man s interaction with his reclusive uncle, who sought to prove that any even number greater than two is the sum of two primes, which is a famous unsolved mathematics problem called Goldbach s Conjecture . This unusual novel discusses mathematical problems and some recent history of mathematics. As a publicity stunt, the publishers Bloomsbury USA in the U.S. and Faber and Faber in Britain announced a 1 million prize for anybody who proved Goldbach s Conjecture within two years of the book s publication in 2000. Not surprisingly, given the difficulty of the problem, the prize went unclaimed. 1. Goldbach's weak conjecture

In number theory , Goldbach s weak conjecture , also known as the odd Goldbach conjecture , the ternary Goldbach problem , or the 3 primes problem , states that Every odd number greater than 7 can be expressed as the sum of three odd prime number primes . A prime may be used more than once in the same sum. This conjecture is called weak because Goldbach s conjecture Goldbach s strong conjecture concerning sums of two primes, if proven, would establish Goldbach s weak conjecture. Since if every even number greater than 4 is the sum of two odd primes, merely adding 3 to each even number greater than 4 will produce the odd numbers greater than 7. The conjecture has not yet been proven, but there have been some helpful near misses. In 1923, G. H. Hardy Hardy and John Edensor Littlewood Littlewood showed that, assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis , the odd Goldbach conjecture is true for all sufficiently large odd numbers. In 1937, a Russian mathematician, Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov , was able to eliminate the dependency on the generalised Riemann hypothesis and proved directly see Vinogradov s theorem that all sufficiently large odd numbers can be expressed as the sum of three primes. Although Vinogradov himself was unable to specify sufficiently large numerically, his own student K. Borozdin proved, in 1939, that 3 sup 14348907 sup is large enough. This number has 6,846,169 decimal digits, so checking every number under this figure would be highly infeasible with current technology ... 18 math for the strong Goldbach conjecture, and not much further than that for the weak Goldbach conjecture ... doi 10.1090 S1079 6762 97 00031 0 ref that the generalized Riemann hypothesis implies Goldbach s weak ... Euler attributed the result to a letter now lost from Christian Goldbach Goldbach . Proof Goldbach s original proof to Euler involved assigning a constant to the harmonic series mathematics harmonic series math textstyle x sum n 1 infty frac 1 n math , which is divergent series divergent . Such a proof is not considered rigorous by modern standards. It is also interesting to note that there is a strong resemblance between the method of sieving out powers employed in his proof and the Proof of the Euler product formula for the Riemann zeta function method of factorization used to derive Euler s product formula for the Riemann zeta function . 1. Waring?Goldbach problem

The Waring Goldbach problem is a problem in additive number theory , concerning the representation of integer s as sums of powers of prime number s. It is named as a combination of Waring s problem on sums of powers of integers, and the Goldbach conjecture on sums of primes. It was initiated by Hua Luogeng ref L. K. Hua http qjmath.oxfordjournals.org cgi pdf extract os 9 1 68 Some results in additive prime number theory , Quart. J. Math. Oxford , 9 1938 , 68&ndash 80. ref in 1938. Problem statement It asks whether large numbers can be expressed as a sum, with at most a constant number of terms, of like powers of primes. That is, for any given natural number, k , is it true that for sufficiently large integer N there necessarily exist a set of primes, p sub 1 sub ,  p sub 2 sub ,  ...,  p sub t sub , such that N p sub 1 sub sup k sup     p sub 2 sub sup k sup     ...    p sub t sub sup k sup , where t is at most some constant value? ref cite journal last Buttcane first Jack date January 2010 title A note on the Waring Goldbach problem journal Journal of Number Theory publisher Elsevier volume 130 issue 1 pages 116 127 doi 10.1016 j.jnt.2009.07.006 ref The case, k 1, is a weaker version of the Goldbach conjecture. Some progress has been made on the cases k 2 to 7. Heuristic justification By the prime number theorem , the number of k th powers of a prime below x is of the order x sup 1 k sup log x . From this, the number of t term expressions with sums x is roughly x sup t k sup log x sup t sup . It is reasonable to assume that for some sufficiently large number t this is x c , i.e., all numbers up to x are t fold sums of k th powers of primes. This argument is, of course, a long way from a strict proof. 1. Lemoine's conjecture

In number theory , Lemoine s conjecture , named after mile Lemoine , also known as Levy s conjecture , after Hyman Levy , states that all odd integer s greater than 5 can be represented as the sum of an odd prime number and an even semiprime . To put it algebraically, 2 n 1 p 2 q always has a solution in primes p and q not necessarily distinct for n 2. The Lemoine conjecture is similar to but stronger than Goldbach s weak conjecture . For example, 47 13 2 17 37 2 5 41 2 3 43 2 2. OEIS id A046927 counts how many different ways 2 n 1 can be represented as p 2 q . According to MathWorld , the conjecture has been verified by Corbitt up to 10 sup 9 sup . The conjecture was posed by mile Lemoine in 1895, but in more recent years came to be attributed to Hyman Levy who pondered it in the 1960s. 1. Olivier Ramaré

notable date May 2010 Olivier Ramar is a France French mathematician who teaches at the Universit des Sciences et Technologies de Lille . In 1995, he sharpened earlier work on Schnirelmann s theorem by mathematical proof proving that every even number is a sum of at most six prime number prime s. This result may be compared with Goldbach s conjecture , which states that every even number except 2 is the sum of two primes.
