He co owned the Newark Eagles baseball franchise in the Negro league baseball Negro Leagues with his wife from 1935 to 1946. Manley bought the Brooklyn Eagles and Newark Dodgers and merged them into the Newark Eagles in by 1936 . An active owner, Manley also served as vice president and treasurer of the Negro National League 1933 1948 Negro National League at one point. He met his wife, Effa, at a New York Yankees game in 1935, and he involved her in the operation of his club. Her commissions included small Spanish style houses in the 1920s, work on Miami s U.S. Post Office and Federal Building in the 1930s, with Robert Law Weed the masterplan for the Coral Gables campus of the University of Miami and its first large classroom building in the 1940s, many tropical modern houses, and the University of Miami s Ring Theater, the shell for the Asolo Theater at the Ringling Museum in the 1950s, and she continued through the 1960s and early 1970s to have numerous commissions. Martin Manley born August 27, 1952 is a former US Assistant Secretary of Labor , developer of a US government agency , entrepreneur and founder of online bookseller Alibris . Early career Manley was born in Azusa , California and attended Lowell High School Whittier, California Lowell High School in Whittier, California. During the 1970s and early 1980s, Manley was a prominent California labor organizer. He held held positions with the Hotel, Restaurant Workers in Monterey, California now UNITE , Hospital Workers Local 250 of the Service Employees SEIU , and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers IAM . He was among the earliest union organizers in Silicon Valley , directed a large community based campaign in Silicon Valley during the1984 US Presidential election, and was a frequent and prominent critic of AFL CIO President Lane Kirkland .
