    Multiple issues unreferenced June 2008 notability June 2008 Georgia State University Foundation, Inc. is the fundraising arm of Georgia State University and is the primary destination for gifts to the university. Under the supervision of independent, volunteer board trustees, the foundation manages assets of more than 446 million, including 100 million in endowment funds. The mission of the foundation is to support the university by securing private funding and by protecting and growing the Foundation s assets. As the state of Georgia provides 30 of the university s operating budget and 10 of its capital outlays annually, the foundation and its donors are important sources of operating, endowment and capital funds. Private gifts to the foundation for example, played significant roles in the renovation of the Rialto complex, in the construction of the Helen Aderhold Learning Center and the Parker H. Petit Science Center. Currently, more than 200 endowed scholarships and 60 endowed professorships and chairs are held by the foundation. The foundation was chartered as a Georgia U.S. state Georgia nonprofit corporation in 1958 and is recognized by the University System of Georgia Georgia Board of Regents Board of Regents as a cooperative organization supporting Georgia State. The foundation board of trustees, a significant reservoir of leadership and talent, is composed of business and philanthropic leaders, both alumni and friends, from Georgia and across the nation. The foundation is a tax exempt charity under Section 501 c 3 of the Internal Revenue Code . Gifts to the foundation are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.     The University of Georgia Campus Arboretum is an arboretum located across the University of Georgia campus in Athens, Georgia . It is open daily without charge. Today s arboretum is the third near campus. The first 1833 1854 was located east of campus, and the second early 1900s was on south campus. The first has entirely vanished, but a few trees remain of the second. Today s arboretum is organized into three walking tours through the North, Central, and South Campus. A free booklet provides maps and tree identification, and more than 150 campus trees are marked by plaques corresponding to the booklet. The campus arboretum should not be confused with Georgia s state arboretum, also operated by the university but located in Thompson Mills Forest , Braselton, Georgia . It is also distinct from The State Botanical Garden of Georgia , organized in 1968 as the university s third botanical garden, and located off campus.     The University of Georgia College of Education COE is one of fifteen colleges and schools within the University of Georgia UGA in Athens, Georgia Athens , Georgia U.S. state Georgia , United States . The COE comprises the schools of Health and Human Performance, Leadership and Lifelong Learning, Professional Studies, and Teacher Education. History The COE was founded in 1908 by the University Board of Trustees and Chancellor David Crenshaw Barrow David Barrow as the Peabody College of Education. Its original head was Professor Thomas J. Woofter who had served on the UGA faculty as the Chair of Philosophy and Education since 1903. The school s first building was George Peabody Hall on UGA s North Campus. In the fall of 1918, the school was the first at UGA to admit women as full time students. Dr. Benedict also taught Materia Medica . Science Hall was destroyed by fire in November of that first year, so the School of Pharmacy was moved into the basement of Terrell Hall. The school hired Robert C. Wilson as its first full time staff member for the beginning of the 1907 08 school year Wilson was the grandson of George Foster Pierce . The first group of graduates commenced in 1908 earning their Pharmacy Graduate Ph.G. degrees. Upon Dean Benedict s death in 1914, Robert Wilson became the director of the school and remained in that position until 1948. Wilson was named as the Dean of the School of Pharmacy in 1924.
